I hate scorching hot weather - everything wilts, me included. My greenhouse water butts are empty already, it's a 100 yard trudge to the garage butts, gloom gloom! >:(
Not keen either. Too hot to be indoors, too hot to be outdoors. We don't have mains water at the allotment. All our water has to be hand pumped up from underground which is hard work in the heat.
Oh dearrrrrrrrr
Come on guys we dont see enough of the sun really to not be happy when it is around.
Maybe its just me but I always feel life is so much better when the sun is shining, can sympathise with your water problem though must be a real pain in the ****.
Maybe you don't get enough sun in deepest Wales but there's no shortage here in London. And 30c in London doesn't make me happy, I promise you!

Oh we get plenty of it, Im surrounded by gorgeous beaches though so that makes a bit of a difference, the sun always feels stuffy and not as fresh in the city I remember I come from Manchester originally.
Ahh well its only here for a week anyhow (if it arrives at all lol) :)
Oops!
Your post made me so cross I pressed the post button too soon.
Had too much sun and high temps thanks......week after boring week of it. Big cracks in the hard as concrete soil.
I'm with Cere's......we want more rain!...and keep the temperature down.
I spent 15 mins yesterday evening just watching the rain fall.....my youngest son joined me...we watched how it made the colours richer and smelt the lovely cool moisture.
I love the sun but just wish it didn't come with the high temperatures. I am soooooooo designed to live in milder climes with my red hair & fair skin. Even lathered in Factor 50 sun cream I can still burn in approx half hour.
I am learning to work around it though i.e. get up 0530 & do a couple of hours of gardening. Come 1000 hrs-ish when the temperature really starts to climb I head indoors & take a siesta. Then once the temperature's cooled I'm out again, normally until I lose the light around 2130 hours.
However say that, I've just set up a small, solar-powered lighting circuit in the greenhouse so I can now see what I'm doing even after the sun's gone down.
H.
Love it Chrisbro, really love the hot weather.......and so do my melon plants. Yay!!!
I hate it when its too hot! :'( I have no energy :'(and I become really irritable :'(
Yes I know its good for the plants but
I like winter ;D I love snow ;D I come alive during the winter months ;D I find it funny when people moan about winter ;D
Duke
Duke Ellington I'm with you. That's me to a t. If we don't have any rain tonight we will have to go & water early tomorrow morning. Doesn't help as I've picked up a cold from one of the grandchildren, but I am barking instead of blowing ::).
Being more or less stuck in bed, I'm not looking forward to it. I loaded up on painkillers & got a lift to the allotment yesterday but couldn't even carry a watering can full of water... so fingers crossed for some good rain in the afternoons!
You shouldn't even be trying to carry watering cans. Naughty Boy.We had to leave the plot early today cos it started thundering and I'm a wimp when it comes to thunder.Ower Tone say's its the lightening you should be scared of not the bloomin thunder. No rain with it mores the pity. The weeding was so easy today after yesterdays rain.
I'm another one who doesn't like the heat. I lived in Spain for 11 years and was used to it then - but now my favourite temperature is around 22C.
Wouldn't it be lovely though to get a few hours nice steady rain to give my poor veggies a good drink and to fill my seven water butts at the same time? My fish pond will have to be topped up with tap water if we don't get some rain soon - the water level went down almost 2 inches today due to evaporation :'(.
Hey ho - we were promised a good summer so I guess we'll just have to be glad for the tourists spending their holidays in the UK instead of on Spanish beaches.
Tricia
Ignore the Forecasters. You`re all forgetting one thing. IT`S WIMBLEDON FORTNIGHT! Before next week is out the heavens will open, the wonderful new movable roof over Centre Court will get stuck, and they`ll STILL have to drag old Sir Cliff Richard out of his seat to keep everyone amused.
Duke, I can't imagine you irritable, you are always smiling! ;)
The sluicegates of heaven were opened over Birmingham yesterday and today. I haven't been to the plot (been really busy) but we've had a lot of rain.
well we need rain desperately, but I've just started two weeks hols so I'm quite happy it's going to be hot 8) 8)/ shades x
rain please :)
I agree with N8R we need the rain our my spuds are not going to be very big.
We are lucky we have had some amazing storms this week, several downpours. So sun will be great for tomatoes.
I am an early bird and will go to allotment early. In evening too much pressure on one source of water. Several taps but only one feed, so if 40 allotment holders all watering there will be a major problem.
I burn too. If the temperature goes above 30 (and I do not mean in the shade) I start to feel awful. But I do love breakfast in the garden.
We went to the plot just before 7am today as it hadn't rained over night. It's less than 2 miles away & it had poured down so we got some potatoes & came home.
I'm another one who doesn't like it when the temperature goes above the low 20s C!
As well as the heat, and humidity that usually goes with it, another problem here in London is that air pollution levels go sky high.
Can hardly breathe this morning its so humid.

yyiipppeeeee yip yip yip!!! i for one am pleased,as someone else said,it wont last for ever, good to see folk out enjoying it. we will be getting the sun longers out up the lottie when the day is at its hottest, going under the trees when we need to cool off
hello think of me here in Northern Italy, its been 30-35 for weeks now, have had storms most days but unfortunately all my pots still need watering, but I have a glut of cucumbers already, and my cherry tomatoes, peppers and chillies are well on their way. Have really enjoyed growing this lot from seed, obviously the climate has helped, but its wilts often withing an hour of watering!!!
My dad has been over from UK and was very jealous!!
Enjoy the weather guys, I am just trying to mow the grass, slowly slowly.....
WOW what a mixed bunch of opinions and for so many dofferent reasons.
Benson you lucky devil would loooooooove to live in Italy, the weather for growing would obviously be great but also being a bit of a budding Jamie Oliver the food mmmmmmmmmmmmm Im salavating just thinking about it!
Watering seems to be quite a big proble on the traditional lottie site in hot weather, my new site has no water supplied at all yet, and I dont know how long it will be before it has any its all subject to getting fundoing from my lovely council to have a supply fitted, so for now my plan is to sweet talk 1 of the neighbouring houses into letting me hook up a hose pipe to their supply.
We also have oil fired central heating here and our oil tank is going to be replaced in a few weeks, so I want to try and find a detergant to clean out the old one properly so I can use it as a huge water butt its 2500 litres so that should cure the problem for a while (hopefully!!)
Anyway as I said before enjoy it (if it arrives at all lol)
must admit I am very partial to parma ham, mozarella with basil, have got 6 bushy basil plants on my windowsill..........
Am currently swealtering mowing the lawn its over 30 at 11.30!!! Husband is away and although my Italian nieghbour helped me shovel my driveway when we had 3ft snow I dont think even he is up to mowing my lawn....
Oh well back to it!

Crikey its a hard life isn't it :)
I LOVE basil absolutely adore it but had no luck with it this year at all :( Its usually so easy to grow but everything I have germinated this year as soon as its planted out it wilts and dies on me, still the corriander, mint and dill are doing very well so not a complete failure lol.
My mint is not doing well, and I would have to buy corriander seed and start from scratch, cant get it in the supermarkets, but can in the local Indian Supermarket. I am going to buy some seed when we visit uk in a few weeks.
Basil defo likes the mediteranean climate, warm with a good soaking.

Sun longers??...are they like loungers but bigger ;) ;D ;D
The hot weather will be bringing thunderstorms so at least thats one good thing.
My smaller greenhouse was 46c this afto.....far too hot and thats with the roof light open, the door open and window vents too.Luckily no toms in that one, only chillies.
The bigger greenhouse with the toms is well shaded....and it needs to be!
Fork I think these new sun longers are just a bit more comfie, so that you can lay on them a bit Longer. :-X ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
There was a moment this afternoon when I thought I might have to build a raft !.

There is nothing more relaxing than being in a caravan next to a river, laying naked on top of the covers with all the windows open listening to the rain on the awning roof. The flash of light, the distant rolling rumble of thunder, the cool breeze gently wafting it's cool fresh smell all over your body as the rain beats down.
So relaxing in fact that you fall asleep after 10 minutes and wake up half hour after it's stopped freezing your n*ts off...
Quote from: shirlton on June 27, 2009, 17:47:03Ower Tone say's its the lightening you should be scared of not the bloomin thunder.
This is something I've been trying to get my wife to understand for 30 years. When you hear the thunder, the bit that can hurt you has already been and gone.
I've got very close to being hit by lightening at least 3 times. the most scary was the ball lightening which rolled towards me fortunately it seemed to be stopped by the glass in the window and it deflected off and went around the house and hit a tree across the road and burned it to the ground. Of course the thunder hit at the same time and i had my cat sitting on my lap so I didn't escape free of injury!!
Sounds to painful to contemplate :o :-[

That is soooo true !
haven't had any rain to speak of (apart from 10 mins overnight last week) for blumin ages (weeks....) My poor spuds look very sorry for themselves, but the chillies and cucs are very bonny!
And having to adjust when I go to the allotment - definitely early morning or early evening.
Am I the only one that likes both winter and summer ? :D
1066
........ and where have you been Tulipa ~ haven't seen you in ages?
Duke ???
I was once walking across a moor in Cornwall when a heavy shower came on. Ten minutes earlier it had produced a single roll of thunder, but I hadn't thought twice about it. Suddenly there was a blood-red flash, no thunder that I heard, and I was lying on my back. I never did work out how close it was.
It's all very well to rejoice over scorching temperatures, but where my plot is it tends to mean floods!
This weather is not a patch on 1976 it went on for weeks back then, I was working in London at the time so it was Willesden Lido most afternoons and the Hammersmith embankment of a night time for a few bevvies, ;)
1976.The year you could hand wash a pair of jeans.Sling em over the line still dripping and they would be dry in twenty minutes.
So hot and humid today. Was going to go to the lottie tonight to water but just had a downpour so I can carry on watching the tennis. ;D

I had an exceptionally nice next door neighbor but that's another story and nothing to do with the weather ::)

Oh yes there is.
We have had a nasty "pong" around the garage/utility/back door for the last couple of days, difficult to pinpoint. Sort of fishy smell. So we removed the bowl of mussel shells I had in the garage (which didn't smell in any case) and it persisted.
I just went to the freezer in the garage to get some icecream, and the smell was really strong - around the freezer. Took a couple of seconds to find it -
LAST FRIDAY I bought some coley steaks for the cats - put them on the top of the freezer and forgot to put them inside. They were smelling and DRIPPING - dripped all over me, and the floor, and everywhere stinks now. Urgh :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
Poor cats never got their coley.
Oh dear!! ::)
Its nice to see all the young ladies wearing their summer outfits, especially after they've got soaked in a thunderstorm - or am I just a perv ? :-[ :-[ :-[

SCORCHIO!
http://www.sed.manchester.ac.uk/research/cure/research/scorchio/ (http://www.sed.manchester.ac.uk/research/cure/research/scorchio/)
LOL Betula Cheers!
We had the worst flood in many years last Saturday. Why can't it spread itself about a bit?
Spare a thought for those of us, like me, who feel rather frazzled in this hot (over 30C) and humid weather!
My joints suffer, particularly in my hands which means that I can't grip or type well. I can't water or weed on the plot which is particularly annoying.
I could take the medication I have but the side effects are even worse!
Stay cool! 8)
Bad luck Flighty. You must be so fed up with it all.
Feeling like a limp lettuce myself.Going down to the plot late evenings.
Betula thanks! Just a bit, but I don't begrudge those who do like it.
I've been consoling myself when I do go by eating the raspberries and picking yet more strawberries!
OH just got back from shops and said a lot of fat ladies out there had a lot of flesh showing and 'things' hanging out. Don't think it did a lot for him, and I got told off for showing my knickers under my short shorts, so had to put trousers on to go to the allotment, but sadly Joe Swift hasn't been there this week, and the rumour was that he was filming 'his weeds'. I am as thin as a stick insect although I eat plenty, so haven't got a lot hanging out. :( :( :(
Im sorry to hear about those of you that suffer medically when the weather is hot, chin up thats the good thing about the UK it could be snowing next week ha ha
Well Pembrokeshire has turned out to be a scorcher today, was grim as anything this morning but well absolutely sweltering this afternoon. It does zap your energy though just been into the town to get a few bits and bobs Im knackered now! Just sat here catching up with email and forums etc could go to sleep!!!!
Will go into the garde later do some weeding and tidying up then a lovely cold shower had one last night after the initial shock it was fantastic!
Well we got to the plot at 10am today intending to do just a half day. Got hame at 5-30pm Had to lift the garlic after all the rain, pick raspberries and currants.Just finished washing the currants and putting them in the freezer. Have to forgo the plot tomorrow to take our mom to the hospital.
Going to keswick.Camping.can not make my mind up to set off about midnight to avoid the heat or go about 4am.If I go at midnight will arrive really early and can't pitch the tent till 11.
What do ya think??
it's not the heat, it's the humidity....... ???
Betula if it was me I'd go at 4am!
Whatever you decide on have a safe journey and a good time.
I would go at 4am too. Cooler then and you wont have to wait so long to pitch your tent. Just aweek is it?
Yes just a week, now I am older I find a week is enough although I do enjoyit.
The car is packed apart from the food.I have never been to the Lake District before.Love seeing new places. Will miss the lottie though. :)

Another scorcher in Sunny Enfield today. 8) 8) 8) ;D ;D ;D

In the summer of 1976 I was a 13/14 year old (it's my birthday today) paper boy delivering to the houses along the coast in South Shields which is normally freezing. I couldn't wait to finish the round so I could get down to the beach and into the North Sea :o
It's the only time I can remember where I could spend half an hour in the water without losing all feeling, it was a great year to be a kid. :)
I hear on the news all these people saying that this weather doesn't amount to much because people regularly go on holiday to places that are just as hot.
Well for someone like me who doesn't take foreign sunny holidays at all this weather is something I find very hard to handle. And I'm only in the North East of Scotland where it is 26/27 deg C. But my veggie patch is in an enclosed area with tallish hedges and walls and the thermometer (in the shade) has got up to 32 deg C.
Ughhh. I'm just melting.

Well in that case a bit of good news for you :)
Here in not so sunny Pembrokeshire it has been lashing it down since about dinnertime, still plenty of grey clouds around but the temprature has dropped dramatically.
THe good news is according to the weatherman it is blowing its way towards you over night, as well as the north of England.
Some parts fo the country have had floods so I read :o amazing how it can change so much and be so different within our little island.
Still a scorcher in Sunny 8) Enfield today, but they reckon the temp is going to drop at the weekend. ;D ;D ;D
We are predicted rain tomorrow morning... I'll believe it when it's fallen... ::)

Its definately much needed. Not only for the plants but for the water butts too!
Its calmed down a bit here now, we had loads of it yesterday but today there are a few grey cluds around but plenty of blue skies and sun 8)
Temp here is just right not too hot not too cold loveryl :)
steady here, at the moment, gives me a rest from all that weeding and it will make it easier to get them out :)
About 15 minutes here... Hardly worth it.
Just a couple of fairly heavy showers. We need more!!
We had a downpour last night, but it looked dry on the lottie late afternoon, its been dull and dreary all day and trying its hardest to rain, then at 1 o clock the sun 8) came out and its been hot ever since. ;D ;D ;D
Well it rained steadily until 1pm then stopped but had a reprise hour after that... dry and mild now... . ;D

Well I live in Enfield and missed the rain, or was asleep. Watered a lot today, and luckily back pain seems to have gone.
:) the rain keeps missing us. we need rain. but I don't want the fantastic weather to end / shades
