Title: has anyone plans for a weeding stool?
Post by: cefer on June 24, 2009, 09:53:11
Hi All,

After a recent knee replacement I cannot kneel or squat to weed the veggie patch, standing  bending over is making my back ache >:(

I wondered if anyone had a design or plan for a stool that could be used, I think one with rockers on the bottom would be good too :)

Thanks in advance
Gill

I bought a rocking stool from ebay. It goes from side to side, backwards & for wards & has a cushion with pockets for tools. I find it very good.

Hello

Dont have any plans as such but I did find this on Ebay:

and this on Amazon:

I have bad knees so know how you feel, luckily I am ok with a decent pair of knee pads.

Hope that helps

Chris

I have had two knee replacements and know the problem Gill.  I use an old cushion to sit on but can only use it if there is someone to help me up when I have finished.  I usually manage to shuffle it along when I want to weed the next bit.

The real answer is to have everything so well mulched so that weeds are kept to a minimum.

Ha. I must clean my glasses more often. I was wondering why anyone would want to go to school just to learn how to do weeding.  ::)

with having raised beds, I can use a folding fishing stool to work on them, also, easily stored away  :)

I don't know if you have ever seen anyone laying flooring on an industrial scale or ever seen chaps on building sites with knee pads I should think these will be ideal for the weeding down the lotty rather than keep messing about with a kneeling pad, on e-bay you can get a set of gelled filled knee pads for £15.00, :)

I have a pair of bright green knee pads. Trouble is I often forget to take them off and wonder why I get strange looks picking the kids up from school.

They do work pretty well.

I have had a massive distal femoral prosthetic knee replacement, I have to sit on my rear to do weeding. I am fortunate enough to be able to get back up without too much difficulty, but kneeling is just impossible.

Digging is tough, I have had to teach myself not to stamp down with my prosthetic knee, which is the way it feels natural. I suffered a spontaneous fracture to the stem of the proximal tibial component a few yeas ago, my surgeon thinks the forces involved in digging hard ground may have been the cause. It was a truly nightmare situation and I was very fortunate not to suffer any nerve or arterial damage from the trauma.

Prefer to use a hoe myself and keep standing.  Do not like kneeling - hurts my knees.  Planting a real problem the ground seems to be getting further away.  Do it akimbo, but finding getting up increasingly difficult.  Could do with a device which holds the plants and allows planting standing up.

You are right I should be getting a stool to sit on.

I bought a kneeler/stepstool from Aldi some time ago.  You either use it as a stool or reverse it to kneel on.  The sides can then be used to help you up.
I cannot find the rocking stool on ebay.  Can you help me?   Many thanks.

Hi Tomatoada,

Is this the kind of thing you mean?

Thanks for reply.  I will study it.  It says it is no longer available.  Did I see the name vertex rocking stool mentioned somewhere?

Not even gel filled knee pads would be any use after a total knee replacement operation as kneeling is impossible.  Like amphibian, I have to sit on my rear on a cushion or squat down if there are just a few weeds needing to be pulled out.

My son bought me a kneeler/step stool just before I had my first op but I have never been able to use it (I have never told him).  It is not steady enough to sit on and kneeling is impossible now.

I am looking for something similar as kneeling is now becoming too painful.
So far the best thing I saw was a rolling work seat but it is only available in the USA.
However these two items look very promising but I haven't yet decided which may be the best for my needs.

A rolling seat at

and
a rocking seat at amazon.co.uk

I hope this is useful and helps us to carry on gardening.

I use one of wilkies seats/kneelers. You could probably sit on thekneelin part cos its well off the ground.

Thanks Shirlton, I have been using one of those for the last few years, but I now need something more stable as my knees are so stiff that I tip over when I try to get up from such a low point. My knees no longer bend as they used to since an injury last year as the joint has some fusion which restricts movement.

However I do want to carry on gardening on my allotment so I am constantly on the lookout for anything that helps, including the long reach tools which I do find helpful.

Hi Sheilan. I've got the one that they have on Amazon although I got mine from ebay & it was a lot cheaper. I've had a look on ebay & I don't think they have it anymore. I loaned it to my son in law who is 6'3" & has restricted mobility in his knee joints & he found it helpful.

Thanks all for your help, I found a kneeler type stool that you can turn up the other way and makes a stool, works really well
