is a car radio as distracting to the driver as is useing a mobile phone..i say YES!!
I`ve never owned a mobile, and my car radio hasn`t worked for some time (not that I feel the need for either), so I can`t make a direct comparison. However, I would think that getting worked up or worrying about it while driving could well be very distracting.
Unless it's hands free definitely... even if probably
:-X
Also a car full of kids a wife and a dog, ;)
Ha ha agree dogs and kids and chatterboxes are a liability, probably worse than a mobile!
Dont think radio is as bad as using a phone, but I find radio 4 distracting.
If I'm on my own music helps me concentrate though, as it disengages my mind and stops me daydreaming.
My thought are a radio is a distraction but in comparison to a mobile i would say no if your driving and it rings there is a big distraction as is changing a CD and the likes, however listening to the radio in the back ground will agree with Lewic is disengages the monotany of driving a long journey.
ive spent many years driving all over this country and abroad and will say s long as its a background thing not blasting out and i dont have to change the channels then i dont see it being in the same comparison as a mobile and also not a distraction as is Kids having ago at each other in the car , or trying to listen to the wife Map read and give me directions to somewhere id driven twenty times before because there is a road its only a inch on the map mmmmmm no what I mean guys
Depends on what you are listening to.
Sport for example has been proven to distract fans.
Music on the other hand has been shown to have both positive and negative affects depending on genre. http://pom.sagepub.com/cgi/content/refs/35/4/571
Speach radio has been shown to have no effect and music in other research has been shown to be benificial..

i remember when i was about ten yrs old one of my aunts pulling over and putting us the kids (about 6 of us - comprising of siblings and cousins of differing ages) out the car and driving off, this was after numerous warnings about the noise due to squabbling shouting etc while she was driving and how distracting it was. we were left for half an hour on the side of the road and when they came back to top it off the adults were eating icecream :'(.
well as a group it only took one warning in the future to get us to behave.
Your Aunt had the right idea but if she did it today, the children would probably be taken into care or poor old Aunt prosecuted for child neglect.

yeah i know shame really, when my cousins and i get together its one of the stories we love to relive and laugh about :).
then we look at our own kids and tell them you guys have it way to good ;).
That is true Borlotti ;D
No I don't agree. I am not distracted by the radio - you can listen without forgetting how to drive!! I bop away when the music is good and it generally enhances my mood!
I suppose for the blokes out there it usually comes down to only being able to do one thing at a time tho!
O B
;D
Kepouros,
welcome to the Club - can we start one?
I have no need for a mobile phone either.
My minimal thrill in life is when besotted females walk into me whilst 'texting' - whatever - & don't acknowledge your existance. My comment 'Get a life' doesn't register.
>:(
I remember when I was learning to drive I had an instructor who talked and chatted to you non-stop throughout the lesson! I've inwardly thanked him many times through my years of driving - he taught me to do it despite any distractions!!
Believe me, the radio is nothing compared to a pair of arguing children. ::) ;D ;D
Well my driving instructor invited me out for a drink. Think he needed one after teaching me. That was about 35 years ago. Still don't like turning right and he was more shocked than me when I passed my test, I was so shocked walked into a concrete post and went home with a bruise on my head and no-one believed I had passed and hadn't crashed the car. Nowadays I only ride my bike.
I stopped and dumped my arguing kids by the side of the road and made them walk - all of 2-3 miles. They got caught in a sudden downpour and were drenched, it didn't make me feel guilty, and I didn't turn back to pick them up. They behaved after that - always.
I've been forced to drive off a German motorway and tell my grandsons I was going to relax and read my book until they apologised for their dreadful shrieks and screams, which made it too dangerous to continue on the motorway.
It took a long time....I wondered if we would ever get back....I was very relieved when they patched it up and apologised.
I always listen to the radio on long drives. It is a difficult quality of attention than talking on a phone, and I find that if something happens on the road ahead the radio becomes inaudible and 100% of attention switches onto the driving.
The only time I have had an accident was backing the car out of a space in Sainsburys with children arguing hammer and tongs in the back seat....I shouted at them and promptly backed into the side door of a low black car that had moved behind me in the second between my looking and moving....that shut them up! It made a hell of a bang even moving at 2mph...........£200 excess on the insurance later, I was not a happy bunny, and they still talk about it now. ::)
No code for my radio in the car so that does not work and i think in almost 30 years of drivin i have only had one car with a radio that did work ;D
I find the sat nav very distracting and i do tend to shout at her for telling me the same thing 6 times ! i have even taken a wrong turn just to anoy it ;D ;D
At the risk of opening a can of worms and offending people, I think smoking is one of the most distracting activities to do while driving, and in my mind far worse than using a phone. You can't hold the wheel properly while clutching a cancer stick, and what if some hot ash dropped down into your lap while driving? That would be eye watering for anyone, but especially the men I would think! Music can be helpful and calming if stuck in a jam or behind people that just wont get a move on, but I think it needs to be selected carefully, as some music can make me feel even more wound up. I guess you can probably tell that I'm not the most patient or tolerant of drivers. Ok, rant over now!

No problem with music in the car and I'll be joining Tel's no mobile club. ;D ;D ;D
