ok, possibly me being dense but what diameter wigwam for 10/11 runner beans then...I gt the spacing for rows or double rows but how does this equate to wigwams?
Not dense - may be overthinking this a bit ;)
This is how I do it - I work on one cane per plant and 12" between (give or take) I then place 4 canes one each at the end of an invisible + about 3' apart. I then use the remaining canes to fill in the gaps - tie them all in at the top and plant, water and wait. ;D
Use this formula to work it out for your self;
Example; Say you have 12 plants and the distance apart is 8"
Then the formula is;
12 x 8 = 96" divided by 3.142 = 30 ½" approx = Diameter of Wigwam.
You can substitute the plant numbers and distances apart to suit your own needs
many many thans for help folks. can I use this sme formulae for peas? Didn't even think of Pi :)
I make a wigwam of 8-12 canes in a 5'square and plant beans at the foot of each cane... (the no maths option...) :)
Quotecan I use this same formulae for peas?
Yes you can use it in any circular situation!
For a square; divide 96 (as example) by four = 24" so you set the four corners 24" apart.
Thank you all for this, I have planted out two wigwams this afternoon :)
I use a different formula but it works just as well.
Poke 12 canes into the ground to form a nice circle, tie them together at the top and plant a bean at the base of each one.
I only introduce pi into the formula once the beans have grown, been picked and then cooked. Preferably steak and kidney, sometimes chicken and mushroom or even beef and onion.

Plot69, you had "better bean" far away from North Wales or you may have Pi in your face :)
Same here Plot69

Pi-thagorus? No, he wasn't into pi's, he was into hipotsofstew.
How do you find an hypotenuse...
look for tracks round the water hole... :)
Are you lot "angle---ing " for a response......if I don't reply it's not because I am "obtuse"..it's cos I'm made of stern "stock" (you lot are barking ;D )
I'm so obtuse I'm almost scalene... :)

(apologies in advance for this)

You lot read like Py-thia consulting The Oracle ;D
Well my formula for success is known as 'winging it'!
I use a stick and string to mark out a circle in the soil, then just put canes in around the marked circle opposite each other at 12 o'clock, 6 o'clock, 9 and 3, then just put the other 4 or 8 canes equidistant from them......result! No measuring required! ;D

That just about sums up the way I grow everything.
Deb P and Plot69 me too!
ooo can I join the winging it club ;D ;D ;D
sorry I forgot I was already a founder member ::)
