Title: broccoli flowers
Post by: Mojo_77 on June 20, 2009, 19:25:34
A couple of my broccoli plants have started to produce little greenish white flowers but no central heads. Most of the others have started to produce heads now, and I grew them all from the same seed packet. Is it possible they're a different variety or am I doing something wrong?

I guess no one knows! I'm wondering whether to eat them or not.

You can eat them as long as they aren't "fully blown" flowers. They won't taste as sweet as the young stuff, in fact possibly a tad on the bitter side.  My tip would be to add them to stir fry dishes (cut as much of the stem off as you can) lots of butter and garlic and other strong flavoured veggies.  ;)

The flowers opened today, they look suspiciously like oil seed rape, so must have either found their way into the seed packet somehow or been dropped by a bird at a similar time to when I planted the others.  ??? I'll dig them up tomoz.
