growing rooster spuds this year...first time..when can i expect to harvest
JTW
when did they go in jtw?
lbb
PLANTED ON 17TH MARCH
JTW
ours were put in about the same time, jim..got some really good sized ones on, have a 'firkle' underneath and see what you've got ;D
P.S.
Dont forget to harvest at sunrise. ;D ;D
Rooster are main crop potatoe,s so should be lifted about mid september or about 3 weeks after the flowers have died off
rooster are an early main so wouldnt they just need at least 15 weeks?
that would give you the 30th june from the 17th march?
they will get bigger if you leave them but if you need them now i would have a look
if you dont need them water them and leave them to swell a little
they will be fine in the ground for a long time yet(not withstanding blight and slugs) depending
how big you want them.
good luck JTW, let us know how it goes

I grew Rooster potatoes for this year the first time (a pack from Lidl), and am just harvesting them. Very impressive yield from our poor chalky soil - I got an average of 18 sizeable potatoes from each root and the only fertilisation they got was some comfrey. Also every tuber was in good condition in comparison with Desiree and Maris Piper which suffered badly from scab during our dry Summer. I shall certainly try growing them again.
Good crop for me too - just taken them up and they are delicious!!
We had an excellent crop too, but lots of them were badly holed, I presume from slugs. They make great wedges though, as long as you cut round the holes, and the skins are scrummy! None of the other potatoes we grew were affected by slugs (PFA, Charlotte, Kestrel, Nicola and Nadine).
Have a look at Setanta... basically a Rooster with added pest protection (blight and slugs)... Mine are gorgeous to eat and suffered a lot less than my other red main, Desiree.
