I was very lucky this year to be given 12 tomato plants by a friend that had grown to many. But it was short notice so I did not have time to get grow bags. What I have done is stuck them in a raised bed I have free with quite a bit of space between them. I am planning to add canes aswell so support them, has anyone else tried this before.
Also I had a few cherry tomotoe plants so I have put them into my hanging basket, will this be alright?
Will be fine in a raised bed if the blight stays away... :-\
Cherries in a basket?? Only if they are dwarfs/tumblers.
Caveat - raised beds dry out badly.
Hi caseylee,
I have always grown mine outside on the plot and they have been fine.
Depends how long they take to fruit. Early varieties which fruit in 70 days or less can usually be counted on for a crop if the blight keeps off.
I put some of my Cuare de Bue in a raised bed and these are doing much better than the ones I have in pots. They are shorter, bushier, with thick stems and flowers, whereas the ones in pots are very straggly and arent flowering yet.
Also have a cherry tomato plant in the raised bed and it is enormous! There may well be other cherry toms more suited to hanging baskets though..
