Title: Courgette Pot Sizes
Post by: meg_gordon on June 13, 2009, 14:37:51
Hello everyone

Am growing courgettes for the first time and have now got five plants - will they be ok each in a 7" pot (sorry I still work in old money ;)) and do I put in canes to tie them in to - like I do with my cucumbers?  (by the way, some of the leaves have got a silvery "dappled" look - is that ok - first fruits are formed already)

10" would be better. I grow mine on top of the compost heap

No! they tend to spread (hence the bigger pot) rather than grow high.

This is quite common in some varieties

Pick them when they are about 4"-6" long.

Picking encourages more fruiting!

Tee Gee thanks so much for this - someone laughed when I said I had three plants - guess I can look forward to lots of courgette meals ;D

More for the recipe forum than this, but I loved the flowers stuffed with feta cheese and deep fried like you get in Greece - very slimming!!!!

Fill the pots with a good percentage of manure or compost (Not potting compost).  They are very hungry feeders.  Perhaps some heavy stones in the bottom of the pot.

I've got 18 plants!  Love courgettes, we eat loads.  Had 6 plants last year and not nearly enough courgettes.  What we don't eat we'll give away.
