Title: MEET LITTLE ZIG
Post by: betula on June 10, 2009, 16:07:49
I found him in the field this morning. Not moving. When I checked he was still alive.

Went back with a box.Looked on the web for advice.First thing is to get them warm.Could not find our old hot water bottle and then I thought.Propergator.Popped in him. After a while he was still very much out of it,tried him with a tiny drop of sugar water. He is now at the vets and a very kind lady from hedghog rescue has agreed to nurse him if he gets any better.
The vets have him in special care at the moment. He has no obvious sighns of injury. They have put him on antibiotics and fluids. The vets themselves are paying for this .I did offer to pay but they said it was OK.

We have to hope that he starts responding in the next 24 hours.

We found one a few years ago and Tony took it to Tiggywinkles. They keep them until they get to their proper weigh and then release them into the wild. They even asked if we wanted to go see it freed

He is adult size.

No obvious injury when I checked him and confirmed by the vet but very poorly.Almost unconscious. He may have picked up poison,we do not know at the moment.

If they eat a slug that has consumed poison pellets they can become very ill.

He might make it. I once rescued a young mouse that had eaten mouse poison, I put it in a box and gave it water with a paintbrush! I think the poison dehydrates them severely. After a couple of days, it was well enough to chew its way out of the box and disappear.
My mum had to go and check for dead mice early in the mornings, to stop me from trying to rescue them... :/

Good for you! Fingers crossed that it recovers. Sadly it's years since I last saw one.

They visit my carport every night. I think the HH food helps. They love a bowl of Spike & a good slerp in the water bowl. I love HHs.

Really sad news.............just rang the vet and they had to put him to sleep this morning.

If you find a sick hedgehog please rescue it.If they are just left they can get fly strike which is a disgusting way to die.

Feel ridiculously upset about it. :(

Sorry to hear that betula.  Little chap was obviously too far gone by the time you rescued him.  There's nothing more you could have done.

I echo Ceres' sentiments.  I'm not surprised that you are upset though, I know I would have been.   :(

Thank you for all the support ;D

Been reading up on the hedgehogs. Please think twice before using slug pellets.

Strimmers regularly kill and horribly maim hogsPlease walk the ground you are to strim before you proceed.

Aw poor little bugger. I have to check our rabbits rear end daily to make sure that they don't have fly strike and they are in the house. We are really carefull that we don't leave doors open for the flies to come in. At least you did what you could Betula. So much happens in the natural habitat that we have no control over but it doesn't make it any easier when an animal dies :'(
