Hi
1st year with a allotment for me and very green behind the ears so to say but i was wondering can i lift my onions now and if so will they store ok or do you have to wait for the top to yellow????
The reason i ask is mine are getting very big and may waste half of it when cooking as i don't use them every day...
Thanks
Steve.
What sort of onion? Only a few of my overwintering onions survived the winter, but I've just lifted those. If they're spring-planted, you could lift them for immediate use, but if you want them to keep, you need to leave them till they're ready.
Thanks for that.
They are spring planted cannot remember the variety with out looking in my diary
As Robert says - & they don't (shouldn't) yellow, they just start flopping over.
Half an onion keeps well in the fridge, pop it into a plastic bag so the whole fridge does not smell.
I tend to wait until the first inch or two of the leaf tip turns yellow then start harvesting from then on.
But there is nothing to say you can't lift them sooner after all you are growing them for your needs not anyone elses.
Once you lift them store them upside down (keep top on) to drain any excess moisture/liquid out of them and they will store better ( less chance of neck rot)

After a week or two like this; dress them and string them up;

Thanks for all the advice ;)
And Tee Gee thank you and what a impressive store hope mine turn out like that.
