Title: Little leeks
Post by: Digeroo on June 06, 2009, 21:38:19
I have never grown leeks before.  Can't stand the taste or smell of them.  Sowed my leeks and they germinated well.  Kept them watered but they have been growing so slowly.  They still look like blades of fine grass.  Am I doing something wrong?

If they are in cells they have probably used up all the nutrients...
Don't worry, plant them out or pot them on...  :)

Same here, I plant out the leeks after I dig up the early spuds. They always get left in modules far too long and never grow much until I plant them out. Must remember to pot them on earlier next year. Same with the cabbage seedlings, I only pricked them out yesterday, now I just live in hope they've got long enough to grow.

No they are outside, and soil does not seem short of nutrients.  Everything else is growing like crazy.  It like light the blue touch paper and stand well  clear,  Though I will try a feed.   Do not have a greenhouse, so would have had to have the stinky things on the windowsill.  I am growing them for my daughter.  Have they been too cold.

Hi Digeroo,

How long ago did you sow them?

Mine have been in the ground for about a month now and just look like blades of grass too.  Last year it was July before they were ready to transplant to their final spot so I am not too worried yet.

Good luck

T.

Thanks Tulipa July sounds great, should have some more space to put them by then.  Everyone around seems to be planting out leeks so thought I should be as well.  They are obviously going for big leeks, quite happy with small ones.

A few years ago I bought a David Austin rose. The pot it came in is very deep and I use this pot for sowing my leeks. I've never suffered from spindly leek seedling since I started using this pot. It doesn't have to be a David Austin pot but any good deep pot will do.

Always a good start for leeks.
Sow in the top a big pot filled with good GP compost.
Planting out mine tomorrow!

Umm... if you can't stand them, why did you plant them?
