Title: Grow bags
Post by: meg_gordon on June 06, 2009, 18:47:50
After watching Beechgrove Garden and Gardener's World, I've decided to copy them and half my growbags and grow toms and cukes in an upright bag - this only gives two plants per bag but it was such a horrible year last year, I'll try anything for a bigger harvest this year ;).  Anyone tried this before - and did it make a difference?

I know people who stand their growbags on end and bounce them up and down so the compost falls. Then they lay the bag down and fold the loose end under. This makes a fatter growbag in which they plant only two plants.

Great idea - might try that for a couple of my tomato plants, thanks

I've done it before where you cut the bags in half and plant in 2 deep bags - it's better than in the shallow bags in my experience as the plants can get deeper and are a bit more stable.  I have now got loads of morrisons black flower buckets and fill them with grow bag compost for my toms as the pots don't fold over when you water them as sometimes happened with the bags.

Thanks Tinkie_Bear - I decided to use my cane supports so each bag is placed with its cane held rigid, hopefully meaning that everytime they are watered they will remain upright.  Just waiting on the flies arriving now the greenhouse is in order :-[

........Cut the bag in half, roll down the bag edges this will ......

This also means that you can unroll as you add more compost.
