WATER-ITS USE AND ABUSE
It seems to be a common idea that garden plants must be watered continuously as soon as the topmost layer of soil looks at all dry. In such cases the wielder of the water-can or hose never stops to ask himself whether the dryness is merely superficial or not, or whether he is doing more harm than good in supplying moisture. In the majority of instances he is undoubtedly doing more harm than good. Surface watering, such as usually, make the surface look nice and moist, but particularly in the early part of the season, they reduce the soil temperature dangerously. Also in the summer, they coax the roots up to the surface, and, if a hot dry day follows, these roots are only coaxed to their own destruction. The criticism would be less justifiable if a thorough soaking of the soil were given

At least I can work mine again... but I bet it sets again before July... :-X
