Title: Re: Spinach
Post by: minxy on June 06, 2009, 08:38:55
I would like to just ask advice on freezing spinach.

Is it possible and what is the best way to do it?

I have lots of spinach however I am inexperienced in growing it and it looks as if it is now bolting??? It looks as if it is about to flower, would it be better to dig it up and set some more??

Thanks very much.

Hi mines the same. So I try and sow some in modules every 3-4 weeks to keep me going through the summer. I don't freeze spinach - but that is because I like spinach salad etc. But maybe someone else can help - or maybe put the link in recipes?

Suzanne :)

This is a piece i found in a great little book called "Will It Freeze". Strip the leaves off the stalks, wash thoroughly and put in a large saucepan - don't add any more water, there's enough clinging to the leaves. Cook until tender, drain, cool and then squeeze or press out excess moisture. Chop and pack into polythene bags in small quantities, seal and freeze. Recommended freezer life: 1 year. To use: re-heat gently from frozen in a thick saucepan, stirring occasionally. Season with a little butter and/or cream.

exactly as spudly says,
i pack into large zip bags and lay them flat so it freezes in a thin layer and i can break it.

Rinse off, dip in boiling water for 20 seconds, drain, put in bag, freeze. Simple as that.

Hi all,
Follow the above advise, plus what I like to do is when wilted & squeezed dryish, form into a ball, a bit bigger than a golf ball, place this on a piece of foil or a plate, freeze overnight then pop it into a bag, do this several times with each batch of spinach & you will soon have a bag full of ready to use spinach balls :D

Thanks Spudly for that great bit of advice on freezing Spinach and to everyone else that replied it was very useful!

I got a little ahead of myself yesterday and dug it all up and set some more however I do have some coming now. I guess you live and learn and it is my first year at this so I shall definitely freeze some from the next batch, thanks again.  ;D
