Title: Nash Pear tree problems
Post by: cambourne7 on June 04, 2009, 23:54:15
Hi

Last year and now this year my pear tree has looked really healty and suddenly the leaves go brown and dry and fall off and after about a month is starts to grow again.

Its in a pot and does produce fruit (although small) ... is this normal behaviour?

Cam

If the leaves on your pear go brown uniformly it's probably lack of water.  Small fruit may also be lack of water and food, or trying to grow too many fruits on a small tree - you may need to thin the fruits out to get bigger pears.
If they go brown in patches first, then drop it may be midge or mite.

A little more back-up info is needed before an educated guess can be made, Cam!!
How old is the tree?how big is the tree? how big is the pot? when was it put in the pot?what is the soil/compost type? do you use tap or rain water, or a mixture? what do you feed it with?does it ever dry out in the pot?is it protected from wind? is it protected from frost?
these issues all need answering before you can get a proper answer to the problem. fruit trees in pots are a specialist care thing, they ain't low maintenance!!! ;)
