Well I have managed to post a slide show!  ::) Thes fruit trees came from J Parker and to say I wasn't happy is an understatement! They are going to replace them but say I can keep these! Can I save them?

Hi gardenqueen.  I purchased three dwarf apple trees via a newspaper (should I say which one?) and when they eventually arrived - I was firstly shocked at how small they were and secondly that one had the top broken off......it would seem they are none too careful when packing the trees and it might have been better if they had used a larger box!  Still, like you, they sent a replacement for the tree that was damaged.   I would plant the trees up and leave them to do their thing for this year and hope that by next year they have recovered and produce better quality foliage and perhaps in the future some fruit.

Hi Twinkle toes. Yes mine are very small and certainly not worth the money spent! They are normally £10.95 each but I had the 3 for £21.90 still pretty expensive for the quality received! Never again! I will plant them out water them and give them a chance but I don't hold out much hope!i

Most of the time fruit trees can be trimmed down to just above the graft and new shoots will develope in the first year. But i'm not sure if its ok to do it this time of year.

Personaly i would take a chance and trim of all the side branches and just leave the main stem.

Look at page 72...http://books.google.com/books?id=5-EIpn1Is4IC&pg=PA68&lpg=PA68&dq=%22fruit+tree%22+training&source=web&ots=M0CKWeNLt-&sig=wsakZQ7FdEHjwDtdcj2ct8WlzzM&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=7&ct=result#PPA72,M1 (http://books.google.com/books?id=5-EIpn1Is4IC&pg=PA68&lpg=PA68&dq=%22fruit+tree%22+training&source=web&ots=M0CKWeNLt-&sig=wsakZQ7FdEHjwDtdcj2ct8WlzzM&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=7&ct=result#PPA72,M1)

I've always had a habit of trimming them back to the main stem, but I've now been told it's better to let them establish first. I once had one broken off 3 inches above the graft. It grew back well, and now bears fruit. The question in my mind is what the roots are going to be like. A strong root system makes all the difference.

I'd complain in writing about the quality, and get a refund. Don't want to put a damper on your enthusiasm for growing fruit, but feel you'd be best to start over and get your trees from a reliable nursery that sells proper trees - even if you have to pay a bit more.
I've used Marshalls, Keepers and Blackmoor, all with very good results.

Chapter 2! Replacement plants received yesterday morning, I won't bother posting more pics but suffice to say they were even worse than the first lot! The pear tree was covered with insect infestation, under the leaves, the other trees just diseased! Glad I didn't plant the first lot because as far as I am concerned J PARKER can have them back at their expense and refund me my money!
