Title: Bulb on Top of Shallots ?
Post by: mpdjulie on June 03, 2009, 13:41:41
I noticed yesterday that on top of one of the leaves from my yellow moon shallots there is a bulb type growth.  They were planted at end of February and now the leaves are about 8-12 inches high and the bulbs are noticeably separting and growing quite large.  Are they ready to be harvested or is this a normal part of the growing process as I have never grown shallots before?

No, but there are varieties of onion that do that... like Garlics and tree onions...  :-\

It sounds as if they have gone to seed.  If this is the case,  snap the bulbs off the ends.

I have had it a few time its just that particular one onion in the bunch has gone to seed it won,t affect the rest, just throw that one when you pull the bunch. Its hardly worth snapping the head off as the core will have filled most of the onion
