Title: Potato flowers
Post by: shirlton on June 02, 2009, 18:57:41
I have  a booklet called" Lovells way with veg" and in it he say's to remove the flowers from potatoes as this will improve the yield. Does anyone on here do that?

Bob Flowerdew recommends doing that in Going Organic. We might give it a try with our Ulster Sceptre, non on the  Swifts.

I will when someone explains to me the increase in yield you get if you do remove them.

Personally I think it will be a negligable amount!

I think the theory is; to prevent the plant/s setting seeds because with some types of plant, when it sets seed it is said to have done its (reproductive) job so it basically stops growing.

OK I can live with that theory!

But what of the varieties that don't flower? and those that flower but don't produce seed?

OK then Tee Gee will will experiment. Half will be de flowered and half will be left to their own devices. This should settle things
