Title: Cues. Where am I going wrong?
Post by: landimad on June 02, 2009, 12:50:46
What is it with Cucumbers?
I put the seed in a tray with soil and they show little interest in growing.
I had them in a frame and hardened them off right only to find they have upped and died on me.
Am I doing something wrong or is it that I do not wisper sweet nothings to them enough?
They are an outdoor variety of which I cannot recall the name.

When first planting the seed in good seed compost or multipurpose compost you plant them on the side, they need about 70 deg to germinate. A sheet of glass over the top so the condensation keeps the compost moist and cover with paper to extract the light.
After they have germinated pot them on into fresh compost keeping as much of the stem to surface as possible, push the compost down round the edges of the plant pot so if you top water the water runs down the side of the pot and away from the stem to avoid stem rot.
Keep a check on the bottom of the plant pot for roots coming out this a sign that they need potting on.
Can,t help with the outside bit never done it, but hope the rest helps
