Title: Suggestions for a challenging area?
Post by: Hector on May 31, 2009, 10:18:09
I have a slatted fence that bisects my  south/west facing garden.  One side (not south side) gets direct sun  from firstlight till 12 oclock, it's shaded after that as sun moves.

Is there anything edible I can put here?

I'm no expert, but i would think that is plenty of sun for most things, after all "first light" is about 4 a.m. these days! Maybe not squash or strawberries, but most others should be ok. No doubt someone will be along soon to say otherwise! ;D

strawberries are a 'woodland edge' plant, so will be fine, I grow tomatoes on a west facing wall, in window boxes, there are very few plants that will not be suitable!!! ;)

Anything would grow in that type of location.
I myself grow a lot of veg under the shade of great big 200 year old chestnut trees and have had good crops from there over the years.

  Hello Hector,

regards runners - not too late at all to sow,  some peeps do a second sow even later to

cover damage from freak weather !...........   Spring before last ?

Sowed mine and went away for a week,  found three seeds barely showing but after a

good soak got the lot popping through after only 3 wks, about  4ins tall now.

Shan't worry if they go in later,  you can pick beans through Oct sometimes.

  floss xxx

The Italian purple runner beans grow well in much less light than green runners and they turn green when cooked. A half day sun would work I'm sure. Also, soaking them in water for about 6 hrs will speed their germination.

Would same apply for purple podded peas as I dont have purple podded bean seeds?

I think purple podded peas will want the same conditions as green peas. It's not too late to get some Cosse Violette seeds; I planted all mine unfortunately.

Any chance of seeds a bit later? I'm growing Salmon Flowered but don't have Victorian Purple Podded.

I haven't any more seeds at the moment, but will be saving some of my current batch this summer!

I often sow dwarf beans through till late July and I have no problems with them, gives you a nice late crop.
