Title: What can I put in my spare bed?
Post by: Justy on May 29, 2009, 21:38:23
I have a spare bed left over and was wondering what I could grow.  Any suggestions? (We are not brassica fans in my house!)

I am currently growing: spuds, toms, sweetcorn, courgette, squash, peas, carrots, various salads, onions, strawberries, french beans and spring onions.

If there's nothing that takes your fancy straight away, grow a second lot of beans as you can freeze them. Then.......if you like asparagus.....earmark and feed the bed ready for early next year.

My one regret, I didn't start one off in my first year!

Sounds like you're doing pretty well as it is. Could you build a frame or wigwam for runner beans? Bit late for this season but you could sew parsnips and leeks earlier in spring which would fill the space by now, both stay in the ground for quite a long time.

Or maybe some other fruit. Currant bushes need very little looking after and autumn raspberries produce over a long period and are good to have at the end of the strawberry season.

I see no mention of runner beans, beetroot, leeks and celery.

sorry - forgot the beetroot! I don't actually like it but decided to grow so as I heard it was easy to do!

I know what you mean about the asparagus Downtoearth - I am 5 years into the lottie and really wish I had planted some in the first year.  Maybe that will be my resolution for this year!

I was tempted with celery but had it it my head that it is tricky to grow?

Herbs and flowers.  Things like fennel, mint, coriander, lemon balm, chives all are fab in salads.
