Title: Muddled up my courgettes!
Post by: amanda21 on May 26, 2009, 12:50:21
OK I sowed courgettes and butternut squash a while ago and now need to plant out but they've got muddled up!  I know I know labelling is the way to go - LOL!!  Anyway some seem to have heart shaped leaves and some more jagged leaves - any idea which is which?  Thanks

Mmmm may be difficult but IICRC butternut leaves are more rounded and courgette more jagged but I could be wrong.

I'd agree with that as a rule of thumb  :)

I posted with the same problem recently:

You're not the only one!

The Butternut will be the ones that grow the slowest - and yes, Courgettes have jagged leaves and the Butternut more rounded with more of a bluish tint.

Thanks all - I'm pretty sure I've got them sorted - and yes the BNS are not so advanced - in fact they look pathetic compared to the courgettes so I'm holding off putting them in while we have a bit of a cooler windy few days!  Cheers (and I promise to label better in future - LOL!)

Courgettes not keen on wind either.  They do like a bit of protection at this time of year.  I was once told that they are not happy below 7 degrees.  They do appreciate a bit of fleece on windy days and cold nights.

I planted mine in car tyres last spring, the tyres made great wind breaks. As theplants grew. I removed the tyres.

I can confirm that! I started to harden my courgettes off last week - when it was really windy (must have been a blonde hair day LOL) and they all looked truly pathetic, and started to think I might have lost the lot. So I gave them some shelter and they've picked back up now  :)
