I've recently got an allotment and wanted to get a compost heap started. A local gardener has gave me 30 bags of grass cuttings from a local bowling green. I want to put some onto my heap but is using it all on the heap a good idea considering I have next to nothing rotting atm?
If not, what other uses could I put it too?
I can get a lot more as he is the groundsman for my local footy club, should I take it?
If you compost all the grass at one go you may just get a wet slimy heap.
You need to layer the grass along with other things.
our bowling green has recently been treated with feed, consequently, we can't mulch our potatoes, peas and beans with it, we are putting it in our heap but leaving some in bags until we have layers ;D
First you need to find out if they are treated with anything if they are then ideally you need to know what.
If any weedkiller or feed & weed type products are used they will have to be composted to break down those products, if you have insufficient brown material to mix with them then talk to a tree surgeon you should be able to get free woodchips by the lorryload to compost them with. If they have not been treated then then they can be used as mulch, in bean & potato trenches, for earthing up potatoes etc...
Use it as a mulch. It'll keep the weeds down, and the worms will take it down over a few months.
