Title: Sweetcorn side shoots
Post by: elhuerto on May 22, 2009, 20:06:33
The sweetcorn has been out for about a month now is just over a foot tall and looking good. I noticed today that some of the plants are developing side shoots at a 45 degree angle from just above the base of the stem. Would you leave these on or are they likely to take strength from the main stem?

Cheers

Leave them on, you may find you get extra cobs.

I think they are officially called "tillers" (?as in the Tiller girls?  ;D )

I have had side shoots in the past on some and can confirm that they do not seem to effect the size of the cobs on the main stem but they can give extra cobs.

Mine are still in the greenhouse in double pots, as I started them off early but  I have been too fearful of the weather to put them out.  In the UK

Will be going in today or tomorrow though.

Thanks, I'll leave the "tillers" on  :) I assume a little bit of all purpose feed would be helpful, right?
