Title: Patio Apple Trees - does size matter?
Post by: twinkletoes on May 21, 2009, 15:48:40
Would anyone know how long you should expect these to be at about 2 years?   I have had some delivered and they seem very short.  They came in a box about 18" long.  Many thanks.

There are lots of dwarfing techniques on the go these days so in your case I would say 'size' is not an issue.

Regarding there future growth; I would say with a bit of luck they might flower next year (assuming you have planted them around now) and you may get the odd apple.

But in reality, I would say it will be the year after that before you can expect to get a decent crop assuming you prune them correctly and at the right time.

There is a bit on apple culture here;

Dwarf varieties are meant to be decorative rather than productive.

My view on fruit trees is that if you want fruit get a standard.

The previous occupant of our plot left two dwarf apple trees when we took it over.  They were too close together so OH moved one (and broke it's tap root  ::))  however, the other one gave us twenty odd apples in the first year we were there and 40ish last year!!  It's only about waist high and we reckon its 3 or at most 4 years old.  No idea of the variety, but its a useful number of apples for making chutney or pies etc. without being innundated.

Best of luck with yours!  Hope you get some good fruit in years to come Twinkletoes. :)
