Title: What goes where?
Post by: grannyjanny on May 19, 2009, 15:22:23
OH is very organised unlike me ;). He has just put sheets of paper in front of me  so I can plan what goes where. There are obvious things like roots, alliums, peas & beans & brassicas. Are the brassicas OK to follow on from the potatoes as I dropped a clanger, thought we had a separate bed for them.  I also have some fennel, is that classed as a root, are radish a root, broccoli rappini & raab are quick croppers but do they need to go in the brassica bed? I've sown 30 s/corn minipop & 2 squash (hunter & small sugar) 2 pumpkins (hooligan & jack be little). Do they need their own bed or what can they share with? The brassicas can't go in until the potatoes start coming out, how long can they be kept in pots?
HELP please I am getting a headache.

QuoteAre the brassicas OK to follow on from the potatoes

Yes! in fact this is my preferred follow on to potatoes.

QuoteI also have some fennel, is that classed as a root, are radish a root, broccoli rappini & raab are quick croppers but do they need to go in the brassica bed?

Technically yes! but having said that keep a note of where you had it on the bed and don't plant brassicas in that area next year if you can.

Think about this;

My beds are 30ft long and it is not unusual for me to split this up and plant say brassicas at one end and root crops at the other.

Meaning next year I can reverse this if needs be.

QuoteI've sown 30 s/corn minipop & 2 squash (hunter & small sugar) 2 pumpkins (hooligan & jack be little). Do they need their own bed or what can they share with?

Yes and no!

The squashes & pumpkins are effectively ground cover plants and the runners will run all over, so I guess they could be let loose between the sweetcorn which grows upwards.

Personally I grow my squashes on the compost heap and just leave them to it!

Depends what brassicas you mean ??? Lets know a bit more about these e.g are they summer/autumn cropping or winter cropping?

Thanks Tee Gee. All I have at the moment is PSB & sprouts. It was bought as SPSB but the label says crops in spring, the person who sold it to me said as it was sown early in the year it will crop in summer. I will be sowing cabbages, primo, pixie, & savoy,  caulies avalanche, PSB, WSB, cut & come again caulies, calabrese & some wok brocc (SPSB). As we only have a small plot I will only sow a few of each & will sow them individually in modules to pot on. We went to the plot today & the swift potatoes  have grown a lot since last week & a neighbour said they should be ready in a couple of weeks (planted 10th April). We want to try lots of things so will sow small amounts to see which we prefer & which the plot prefers & then will sow more next year. We've put 40 bean poles for the same reason ;D.  Which bed does celery go in? We have a row of rhubarb which OH thinks should come out as it doesn't look to healthy & that would give us another 18'x4'or5'. The bed the potatoes are in is 18'x8' & there are 18 swift & 18 ulster sceptre in one half & in the other 10 vivaldi, & 10 hunter, so the bed will gradually become available. There is lots of 4yr FYM underneath.

Quote18'x4'or5'. Rhubarb bed

Thats a big rhubarb bed!

Mines is about 8ft x2ft  in wich I have about 3-4 plants.

I think you ought to sit down on your PC and do a layout of your plot then plan your line of attack.

This is how I plan my plot;

In this way I only sow enough for my needs!

A read of this page might help!

I have bought us some large labels in 3 different colours that we leave in when we get the stuff out. This way we can tell at aglance what was there before.Green for brassica,s red for roots and yellow for the mucklovers. Things we have to do when were gettin on ;D

regardless of age thats a really simple and practical way of doing things. You could also take pics of what was where and when. But I like your idea Shirlton

It works for us cos we don't have raised beds we just dig the entire plot.We do keep the beans and sweet peas and onions in the same place so we do have some landmarks. The problem is I cannot stand to see groung lying idle so I tend to put say another row of carrots or something in. This way I can make sure that I am rotating at least a little.

Tee Gee that is brilliant but I can just about switch the computer on & off so I will ask no3 daughter if she can do spread sheets.
Shirl I have bought some large slate labels from Wilkies but with only having 4 veg beds it's easy to see which is which ;).
The rhubarb area is large but allows space either side for cropping as it is within a large fruit bed.
