Title: Piel de Sapo / Christmas Melon / Frog Melon / Vert Olive d'Hiver
Post by: Barnowl on May 19, 2009, 12:25:28
Has anyone tried growing this type?  We were in Barcelona at the w.e and I picked up a packet of 'Torpedo' melon seeds which apparently is a Piel de Sapo type. and can be sown in position in May.  Meant to be a late developer that keeps very well.

No but if you want me to give a couple of seeds a go in that big greenhouse I'll try...  ;D

I'm growing piel de sapo this year, planting out this weekend actually. First batch was lost to snails but germination was good again so have about a dozen plants to go out. Haven't grown them before but early signs are good, plants are looking very healthy.

Hi Chaps, Not a lot of useful advice there  :)  but Saddad, PM me your address and I'll be pleased to pop some seeds in the post to you (but I would consider using the GH cheating if you weren't in the frozen North) and Elhuerto, all the best in growing them in your orchard. Are you using seeds from locals?

This is only the frozen Midlands... now Rossendale where I was brought up, that's the Frozen North... being 800' up as well helped..  :-X

... from the local garden centre. I haven't found anyone else here who grows anything from seed actually, apart from potatoes everything is bought as plug plants in the Friday market.

I suppose the plug plants are priced so reasonably that it's hardly worth the effort of sowing your own unless you want particular varieties? It's not as satisfying as being involved in the whole process but I suppose pragmatism must rule in the foothills of the Pyrenees.

PS Saddad, anything north of Watford gap is the frozen North to me, but I''ll take your word for it there are colder places than Derby.  I'm from sunny Romney Marsh* - as South East as you can get.
