Title: Gartenperle Tomatoes
Post by: northener on May 18, 2009, 21:00:43
Growing them for the 1st time was thinking of putting them in black buckets. Anyone grown them? any tips? Size and taste?

First time for me too - I've got three in 12" hanging baskets in the polytunnel (1 per basket) and they're doing fine. In fact better than I've ever done before with container toms.

Fairly large cherry tom, bush plant up to 2'... I like the taste. Good in baskets and tubs. Have you tried Whippersnapper? Smaller, pinker, better taste IMHO.  :)

I'm trying these for the 1st time as well. They will be outside in a sunny spot in a black bucket  ;D  But now Saddad has gone and added to my list of toms to try next year......

They don't need a very large pot, seem fairly blight resistant, but are very prone to splitting if you don't water regularly.

2007 Gartenperle in its prime

Late September despite serious lack of water (terracotta pot combined with negligence  :-[  hence the brown leaves) but you can just see the pot inside the bucket (emergency soaking) and it's not that large

Actually recovered and went on into October.

A reasonable choice for containers but as Saddad says-there are better ones for flavour

Because, like Cleo and Saddad,  slightly underwhelmed by Gartenperle flavour, I'm trying Balconi instead and also, I hope, whippersnapper (though late sown).

(Balconi currently looking v unhappy as got sun scorched.)

Don't get me wrong, they are fine to snack on straight from the plant.,.. but in the great world of tomato tastes there are others I prefer...  ;D

Got mine free with one of the gardening mags - so trying for first time.  Got lots of other toms on the go so even if they aren't that good, got better coming after them ;D
