Has there been any research done as to their effectiveness?
I dont know about research but it has never worked for me !! I tied them onto my bean poles and one year i placed them around the garden. The pidgeons still made mygarden their home. :'(

Never underestimate the intelligence of birds.
I can never get them to stay in place. Used string before and the edge of the CD wore through the string when they blew in the wind. used wire this year and it still broke. Plus the weight pulls them down and they end up on the ground. :(
Perhaps if they are CD's of Eurovision contest entries they might work ::)
I find most of the scarers that are on offer are a bit of a waste of time.
Nets are the only thing that I have had success with.
c.d's, they about as effective as 'buzzline' i.e. not at all !!
Net them or lose them, don't forget to protect the sides of the area, pigeons do walk from plant to plant, ;) as well as fly.
Our pigeons used them as mirrors to preen themselves before their meals :o :o :o :o :o :o
never had a huge bird problem in my garden but i put the cds up anyway, my neighbour was killing himself laughing when he told me that the neighbours cat chased the reflections from the cds all over my veg patch and trampled the plants :(
hi - I was the allotment today an I thought of your post after seeing a wood pidgeon land on a string of "bird scaring " cd's then hop on to a gooseberry bush next to it and strt tucking in - it was so fat it could hardly fly off!
