Title: comfrey for tomatoes
Post by: staris on May 10, 2009, 23:37:37
i've got a large bed full of comfrey so was hoping to use it as fertiliser for my tomato's and peppers, i've got a 200 litre water but inside the tunnel.
how do i got about this ,do i just chop up the comfrey and drop it in the barrel or put it inside some kind of sack, also does the mixture need to be watered down  ;D

Depends how you want to do it. No need to chop the leaves. You can fill the barrel and get a concentrated liquor, which then needs diluting. Or you can add leaves to a barrel of water for a more dilute version. Keep a lid on the barrel as the smell is quite something!

The only thing i would add was to place the leaves in a sac or netting od some sort as you will need to get the leeves out at a later time this will make the whole soggy mess a better experience

Fill the barrel with leaves (chopped), then cover with water. put something on the leaves to hold them under water. cover the barrel with a good-fitting cover, to keep smell in, and flies out.!!!
Stir every couple of weeks. it should be ready after 6 weeks.
Dilute if necessary, the colour is a good indicator of strength, a light straw colour is what you are after.
Use weekly on tomatoes, peppers, and other fruiting plants, including any of the cucurbits. (squashes)
rgds, Tony  ;)

Good for leeks as the potash helps prevent rust. :)

For my few outdoor tomatoes I cut sheaves of comfrey and just lay it as a mulch around them...it soon rots down and acts as a weed suppressor at the same time! ;D

I also use the leaves as a mulch around my runner beans

I mulched mine with some of the leaves - the rest are in a barrel fermenting.
