Title: Support posts for raspberries
Post by: diamondgirl on May 10, 2009, 10:25:04
I have managed to get some posts to put some wire through to support my raspberry canes.  Can anyone tell me is there a special technique/tool for getting these into the ground - or just a great big hammer?   :-\

Metal posts? Or wooden ones? My rasps (Autumn Bliss) don't need support on our site...
Either dig a hole and use postfix (ready mix), or hit them with a big hammer (sledge hammer) you will probably need a diagonal brace on the end ones...  :-\

They are wooden posts saddad.  Just got back from the allotment and as luck would have it someone is getting their posts wacked into to ground next weekend so have offered to do mine too.  Apparently, there is a special tool to do this that takes no time at all.  Aren't allotment folk wonderful and helpful - a bit like the members on this site.  Thanks so much for the reply. :)

Thanks for the link - that looks exactly like the tool described to me - someone has one and will very kindly be thumping in my posts - sounds like it's sooo much easier than digging them in   :)

It's really a two-person job using a post rammer, but they're much more efficient than a sledgehammer, and don't damage your posts.

I guess they are safer too for the 'post holder' if the sledge hammer wielder's aim is not too good.  :)

That's one of the reasons I hate sledgehammering. The other is the weight of the bloody thing. I can do more damage with the back of an axe, simply because I can swing it more effectively.
