I think I only have room for 2 brussel sprout plants. Is this a waste of time? It's only really me that will eat them in our house anyway. How many do you grow?
Hi anemone,
I'm planning on 14 this year. Only two of us but I luv 'em!!
Usually I grow about 15 plants. This year I have more room so have 34........
12 Maximus
6 Evesham Special
4 Falstaff (Red sprouts)
6 Wellington (Late sprouts Harvest Jan-April)
6 Bedford Fillbasket
For some reason my sprouts always blow but I'm giving them another chance this year and have planted up 20 plants.
A couple of dozen... :)
I was told ... "call yourself a gardener and don't like sprouts!!!"
So I've been given two to grow as a gesture to being a 'proper' gardener.
I'm growing two as well, we are not brussel sprout eaters but are willing to see if homegrown megger fresh sprouts are more to our liking. had plan to grow four plants but left them with husband to look after during he Easter holidays and well he didn't water and they fried ::). re sown and only two germinated so its two it is :).
40 Trafalgar F1s, even the kids love um
Massive lack of space so only growing 6, and I love sprouts.
A dozen. The OH loves them, but they do take up huge amounts of space. I'm growing some salad leaves in between the rows.
6 for me. I would say it is worth growing only 2 - if they go well you will get a decent amount form them.
How tall do B/S grow as we are trying to work out height for covering brassica bed. I have seen PSB on our site & it's not as tall as I thought it would be, told OH 5'.
Janet
This year we have 10 maximus and 10 Brilliant F1. We only grew 10 last year and it wasn't enough
Shirlton are you feeding Sutton Coldfield?
Janet
5' should be fine for the brassica cage Janet... some sprouts get taller than others... and you need a bit of clearance to stop the flying rats landing on it to push it down ... :-X

No but we do freeze some to feed us during the year and of course I do have grown up children who come and raid our stuff. Another reason is that I dont like the sprouts to be any bigger than a 2pence piece so we need more to the pound.
I know what you mean about grow up children Shirlton. We've put up 40 bean poles & will grow different ones to see which we like best & will have loads to freeze & give away. Will have to get a new freezer though. One of our girls used to live in Sutton Coldfield, it's a lovely place.

6 this year, 4 fillbasket and 2 red..us and our family and friends..even our grandson and son in law like home grown sprouts ;D
16 Maximus & 12 Revenge!
So pleased that there is someone growing more than us Tee Gee

Richard how big is your plot?
Janet
Mine aren't in yet. I'll be planting Seven Hills, another the name of which I forget (the seeds are all in the shed) and a rather old packet of Evesham Special. I'm not sure how many of each I'll grow on.
I'm planting just two as it's only for my OH on Christmas day!
about 50 severn hills here, beware dont come to christmas dinner, it could get a little overpowering, especially if you dont like sprouts.
My first seedlings died, so i've planted some more which just broke the surface yesterday. my ambition is to be able to eat these on Christmas day (i'm hoping for about 6 plants)
We've got nine plants on the go this year, we planned on 18 last year, but ended up with seven, due to a plague of caterpillars. Will have closer netting this year, and take more care.
This year I sowed Bosworth, Falstaff, Long Island and Trafalgar in peat pots, the labels got mixed up so we'll just have to take what comes. ::) ::) ::)
