Title: "fess up" time
Post by: Sarah-b on September 21, 2004, 09:27:36
So who's going to admit what they are going to spend on seed/sets/tubers/bulbs/plants/bushes/trees from the catalogues?

My bill is beginning to look astromnomical as I want asparagus crowns, 2 apple trees, a jostaberry (anyone got one?), plenty spuds and garlic and masses of seeds. It's going to be well over 100 GBP.
Will be writing the cheques out in secret I think...
Sarah.

I circled a lot of things in my new T&M catalogue at the weekend. Just seeds, but I reckon the lot'll cost about £100. (I didn't add up as it was just a fun exercise!) There's no way I'm going to buy from them (well maybe that special packet of aquilegias!) If I buy the same things from Simpsons, it'll probably cost £50!

I won't add them up until I have more catalogues!

What on earth is a jostaberry?

Sarah, if you are worried about the bill why not grow your own asparagus crowns.. I bought some seeds 50 in all (ebay 99p + postage) and all of them have germinated.  In the spring when their perminant bed will be ready (I hope)  I can put them in as one year old crowns and only have another 2 years to wait for cropping.  If you hang fire a bit then Focus and other large stores usually have a sale of seeds a bit later in the year.  I got loads and loads last year when Focus had 75% off all their seeds. :D I likes a bargain I does.

yes - maybe I should hold off and be a bit more efficient with the money...
Not sure I can wait that long for the asparagus!

A Jostaberry is a cross between a blackcurrant and a gooseberry - nice big currants in the piccy in the catalogue.

With the asparagus, you still have to wait 2 years for crowns, so just an extra year from seed doesn't seem so bad!
DT Brown - think they do a free/or 10p packet for every so many items ordered.
The catalogue I am really waiting for now is the Tuckers one. Wonder if they have Lao Lavender for sale this year as I quite fancy getting this.
Think I will be spending about £50+ on seeds and things (will probably get some SM3 stuff from OGC) and maybe hemp oil soap. Will need to order nemaslug as well as potatoes have been feasted on (apart from Pink Firs and haven't dug up the Sarpos)
One thing I won't be ordering is Broad Beans as I already have 3 varieties for autumn sowing, and one spring sowing. Will be getting potatoes from potato day at Ryton - last year, spent about £15 on them at 13p a seed tuber (which also included 3 "Accent" which my son picked - 2 actual ones and a stone! I paid 13p for a stone  ::) )

Mimi - I went to Holland Arms (about this time last year) and they were selling off their T&M stock (not getting new stuff in) and I bought a few packets of flower seeds - most of them didn't germinate - esp. the marigolds. They were still selling off these seeds this summer.

Already spent 30 quid and they year is young!  :o  Sshh....don't tell Ava  ;).  Actually, he is more than happy for me to spend money on veggie seeds as he and the kids get to eat them, and I get to have all the fun growing them.  I reakon I will blow about 50 quid as......my lovely skin and blister has done me a suprise seed hamper for Christmas...all veggie seeds of her choice, 20 packets!  I have no idea what will be there, but she did say she knows how much I like unusual squashes so she didn't get any of them!  Exciting stuff.

Multi I never buy anything from Holland Arms  WAY too expensive for me. ;) By the way, I still owe you something for the mint that you saved my life with.   :-*  Give me a pm if there is anything that you want a cutting of.  I have mostly cottage garden plants and basket stuff  in the garden at the mo.  I know that you have a hoard of seeds so I wont tempt you with those (mind you, you probably have them already) Send me a pm and Ill get some stuff rooting for you.

EJ - my T&M catalogue came yesterday and I made a bloomin' mess of the order form - what with all those free seeds, and the strawberry plants, came to £25+ but I saw sense!!! and cut it down a bit! Now, I am awaiting to file the order online (but the website isn't giving me all the free offers I am entitled to  :o ).
VidaVerde catalogue came today. I won't be ordering from them as I have not been impressed with their seeds. The "small flat cheese" pumpkin thing I have is actually a patty pan type thing, and the sweetcorn was pathetic (harvest was 12 kernels), ....

ooooo, I was looking at the VidaVerde catalogue and quite fancied the small flat cheese squash.  I shall hold back from ordering then and see what other catalogues fall through my door.  I ordered the straws from T&M also, well why not I thought, a girl can never have toooo many strawberries!  ;D

I am delighted with Vida verde seeds! Sorry they didn't work out for you multi  :(  My small flat cheese are still growing like mad......least I think thats what they are!! (EJ- don't buy any, may still have some seeds!!)  Fennel from them doing well, and a couple of the other squash going great guns too.
