Title: What next now the seed trays are empty?
Post by: elhuerto on May 07, 2009, 10:29:34
Hi all

Planting out what remains in the greenhouse this weekend, melons, water melons and cucumbers so apart from a few chillis to pot on, that'll be that. I was thinking of sowing some sprouts for Xmas, and a few more lettuces but is there anything else that can be sown around this time?

Cheers!

Lettuces? Greens of various kinds? E.g. kale, chard, more exotic things like amaranths, orach. Beetroot, cauli? Sweetcorn?

Just planted out the sweetcorn and sown beetroot - forgot about caulis though, thanks. What are amaranths and orach? Taste good?

My greenhouse is still bursting with seed trays full of goodies to go out.

Cauli,kale,Sprouts,Brocolli,lettuce,beetroot,courgettes etc.

My bean seed isnt even in yet but it will be this weekend. Not getting caught out by late frosts again this year!!

Im a bit behind everyone else but while they are taking frost precautions...I wont need too.

This will be my first attempt at orach and amaranth, so I can't tell you what they taste like yet - but we love cooking greens, in our house - trying lots this year and then will stick to the tastiest, easiest and longest-producing, next year. ('Matador' spinach, and Red Mustard Leaf are winning the prizes so far this year - both are producing huge amounts, are tasty, and seem rather uninteresting to pests, though flea beetle have had a go at the Red Mustard).

Orach and amaranth are both towards the bottom of this page:

Looks interesting, particularly like the look of amaranth - thanks. I also forgot about parsnips for Xmas but I think it might be a bit late now. My beans are out and looking good - it's got pretty warm here in the last few days so the snails seem to have retreated and I don't think I've seen a slug at all.

If you'd like some orach seed, I can send you some. I have more than I need and apparently it only lasts about 6 months! 'Fraid I don't have any amaranth seed left, though.
You're in Catalunya, I see! I think of that region as one of the most heavenly parts of Europe, it has everything - mountains, sea, history, and fantastic food... and sun... *envy*! :)

Well in Southern Spain you might have an empty green house, courgettes, runners etc outside all covered in cloches, but it is a gamble and some years you win and some you loose.  Allotment is very windy.

Have know front into June.

But soon we will have the lovely long days to enjoy.

Thanks HelloHelen, that's very kind of you. I'm going down the garden centre tomorrow to see what I can pick up. Digeroo, I'm not in Southern Spain but frost is almost impossible there or here at this time of year unless you're in the mountains.

How about doing some companion planting and save your plants from the pests.
Marigolds around the cabbages nasturtiums along the carrots and so on for a nice looking bed and better veggies too ;D ;D ;D
