Title: How much do you pay?
Post by: PJW_Letchworth on May 05, 2009, 10:29:04
I've just paid for my ground rent for my half plot which cost me £28 for the year.  I was wondering what everyone else pays?  When I took the plot on 5 years ago, it was £14, I think this is a huge leap.  My plot is in North Hertfordshire.

This is a regularly recurring topic. We pay £20, up from £10 two years ago and going up to £24 in October for 300sq yards... cheap at twice the price...  ;D

And twice the price is what we pay!

Chessington @ £50 per full plot

Same old supply and demand. Allotments become trendy and the price goes up :-\ Trouble is, i don't think we will see them come down again.

£4.70/pole, up 15% from last year.

For quite a few of our tenants the council can't actually increase the rent at all because the tenancy agreement doesn't make provision, and if I understand it right the unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999 means that landlords can't increase the rent arbitrarily, only by CPI or similar - so we should expect cheaper rents next year!  The Regulations also require 12 month's notice of increase.  My council ignores all that and does what it likes, but I'm trying to change that.

to provide a smidgeon of perspective ... in the middle of the 19th century it is estimated that our allotment forefathers paid in the region of one week's wages for a labourer for a quarter of an acre.

If you substitute the average weekly wage in April 2008 the equivalent cost today comes out at around £12 per pole, i.e. £60 for 5 poles or £120 for 10 poles.

What facilities did they have - er, none ... discount for senior citizens - WHATA?!

What was the take up? ... demand exceeded supply.
Title: Re: How much do you pay?
Post by: Trevor_D on May 05, 2009, 13:08:24
But the actual cost is only one factor.

Is the site secure? Is the access & parking good? Is there water? Are there toilets? Do you have free extras like manure, wood chippings, pallets, etc? Are there tools you can borrow? Can you have sheds & greenhouses? Is the site a friendly one? Are there communal social activities? Is the Committee on the ball? Is the site run-down or thriving?

For the record, a 5-pole on our site is £12 a year. Ridiculously cheap! (Especially as we have a waiting list and the answer to much of the above is in the affirmative!)

Here we pay £21 a year for up to 250sqm, which i think is great even if we do only get water and land. I'm even trying to get a 2nd plot as our site has lots of empty ones. My stepson wants to get one in 1066s area as he has no garden at all. I think allotments are wonderful places  :)

bit harsh sadad!!! our *old farts*  deserve their reduction, not least because they pass down all their advice they have picked up over the years, but also cos they act as a constant precence onsite, and a few of ours run our stores,i as sec certainly dont have time to do that!!! and hey, they earn less than us youngsters!!!!!!

"Old fart" is defined as over 60 on my site. We pay £26 a year (it's £46 for under 60s) and of course we deserve it! Water tap and tank for every 4 plots. Trading shed. Composting loos at either end. Communal compost heap. Communal trolleys and wheelbarrows. Rotavator for hire. Good sources of free wood and pallets. Swap table. Horse manure at £40 for a huge load (I share with other plotholders). :D

One plot costs £3 a year, no water land held in trust/town council and a committee manages the plots.
The second plot costs £43 a year/£25 concession, with water and managed by the Borough Council.

So does that make us newbies "fresh farts" then?? ;D

Plot 1 is roughly £7 per yr no facilities ( we took a derelict area and turned it into productive lottie in 2004 - and put up fences, so parish council decided the investment we put in was lieu of the rent to 2014?

Plots 2 and 3 were £10 per year - but the rent went to £15 per year this year. This is the first rent increase in 20 yrs apparently so no complaints from me. I used to spend close to £600 pa at a gym and spa - hated it. i now get treee times the exercise for a fraction of the cost and love it.

We pay £35 for a ten rod plot as we get pensioners discount.  We have water, a secure site, regular deliveries of wood chippings, a trading shed, a trading table, machinery we can use (on payment of minimal cost to cover fuel and upkeep) and, as of yesterday, we have a composting toilet on site (the people who installed and erected this were all retired).

"Old farts" may be able to go to their plots more often than those who work but on our site its the "old farts" who run things, like being field secretary, keeping the site tidy ad maintained, keeping our field owned machinery in good order, cutting the grass verges and communal areas, managing our wildlife area, arrange schools visits and much more, including investigating sources of 'grants' and the work involved in applying for them.

There certainly seems to be a lot of difference with costs and facilities.

There was talk about the EEC making some uniformity with allotments.

All the same size, facilities to be provided and so on.

We each pay £30 a year, no concessions. The council just supplies the land and we lease it from them as a Self managed self financing site. We could re-let every plot twice over there are so many on the waiting list.

It could be better, but changes do not always mean improvements do they?

Ours are 15 quid a year for something about 2/3rds of the "full size" though the size does vary a bit on our site and there are some half plots too I think....  there's a key deposit for the gate key.... I think the wrinklies get a discount..... we get free chicken wire (rabbits are a menace on our site) there's a communal heap of leaf-mould that's free, a cheap-to hire strimmer, seed scheme and there are water-trough systems every few plots... I'm in Oxford and we've still got a few spare plots (though I think I've just hooked someone up with one of them :D)

Also in North hertfordshire (Royston, which is just in there) I pay £10 for 5 poles.
Popularity means a lot of plots are now being split into two and sometimes even four....
Some of teh old guys remember when a plot was 20 poles (I wish)
We do have gates and very little theft / vandalsim. Water included but no compost / chippings etc.

No local authoriity sites available So I'm on a private site..  Pay £40 for about 3/4 of a plot size.  Water at top of each row, so some are long way from water.  It goes off and on a bit.  But  price includes manure, communal shed and tool use.  Not allowed sheds hens or polytunnels.  No toilets it is a bit of an issue for me, but have managed to pee in a pot. :o

Wish I could have a bigger site, but the allotments have only been going a few weeks and there is already a waiting list.

Smugly...I pay nothing. I've got a shed and hens and a stream runs next to our plots so we have a communal pump for water. This is land purchased by the local electricity authority for a sub station. They bought a whole field, only used a quarter so the excess was split into 4 plots after I approached them and asked. There is land out there that is available for the asking. ;D

We pay £15.50 for our plot which includes water for most of the year. I think there's only two or three taps on the whole site though but we're lucky to have one of them right next to us which is a God send.

There's a steady'ish supply of free manure from local farmers too but we're not allowed sheds, greenhouses or anything that can be classed as a 'perminant structure' which is a pain. There's also no association or communal hut or anything which would be nice. All things considered however, for £15.50 we're happy. :)
