Title: Germination
Post by: Mr Smith on May 04, 2009, 10:08:15
I sent away to a very well known seed company in the SW for a couple of packets of Sweetcorn seeds which I had great results with last year, I have planted one packet in a tray under cover to plant out next month along with the other packet directly in the ground, only about eight seedlings from the tray have shown through which are now about two inches high, so yesterday I went off to a nursery and bought thirtysix sweetcorn plants for £6.00, is it worth bothering with seeds?, :)

Sweetcorn seeds are said to need some heat to germinate so I put mine in damp cloth/plastic bag in airing cupboard, and only plant those that put out a root. They go into newspaper pots indoors, and grow on well. This year they all germinated.

Ordered most of my seeds online this year. I'm growing a variety called "two's sweeter". I have set 44 in paper pots, out of that lot 40 have germinated, not a bad return. Think i caught the weather just right this year. I have set a second batch of 20 and they seem to be doing ok.

I got 74 from 80 sown and as I planned for 70 I am happy with the results.

22 of 32 Honey Bantam came up within days on sowing indoors in root trainers. No sign of the mising 10 a week or so later so a further batch sown to make up the numbers yesterday. Slightly disappointed with the germination rate as the seed's not cheap.

That said, a trip to our local nursery this afternoon had individual, unnamed sweetcorn plants in small pots at 75p EACH!!! I'm sticking to seed.

I planted two packets in a seed tray a couple of days ago, put them under the water heater, and they're up already.

Do sweetcorn seeds need soaking prior to planting.

Just potted another fiftysix Sweetcorn seeds down the lotty and put in my  plastic lean-to, had a count up of what I have already down there and we have thirty plants so along with the thirtysix I bought the other day and lets say forty seeds germinate from the fiftysix seeds I have set I should end up with around one hundred plants allowing for other losses, :)
