Title: The best thing about Autumn...
Post by: aquilegia on September 20, 2004, 09:30:46
My first 2005 seed catalogue arrived on Saturday. I spent a good hour looking through everything in it, circling what I fancied. I haven't added up how much it'll cost as I doubt I'll buy anything from that one as it was T&M - way too expensive. I can't wait for the others to arrive.

......for me is that smell.  The distant aroma of bonfires.

The changing colours of the leaves on the trees, walking by Durham river, and generally thinking about what to plant the following season.

Those shiny Autumn days.  Reaping the rewards of your harvest, clearing your patches of soil and drawing  up plans for what you want to plant next year. Ordering your seed potatoes, feeling cold for the first time and dressing up warmly.  Lighting the first log fire  of the Season.  Thoughts of Halloween, Guy Fawkes night and making the Christmas Cake.  :D busy_lizzie

The best thing about autumn............. around the end of August I always feel like I'm losing control of the flower section of the lottie, then I think "oh well, the growing season is almost over" so I don't worry about it anymore.
In May we always take a week vacation to clean it all up and then I see patches of bare soil and I think "grow, grow, fill those patches of bare soil!" Hehehe.

My son (and now this year I'm sure my 3 year old daughter) always helps me rake up the leaves in the garden, we make a huge pile and them jump into it before thowing them up in the air like confetti. Then we have to rake them up all over again but it's great fun  ;D I also love the colours in autumn and the hug of a thick wooly jumper on those crispy cold days. And yes, making the Christmas cake, it's a family affair and we all get a go at the arm breaking business of mixing, although this year we've got a Kenwood to do that for us.

Yo Peeps

The best thing I love about Autmn/early winter is seeing the moon at 10am in a nice soft blue sky, watching the leaves and the empty asda bags flying with the wind.. looking out the window on a rainy day and watching the washes of rainwater streaming down the windows, ( bit like the tail end of this summer ;) ) I love to see the trees swaying and bending with nature and as it gets colder I remember it is  time to feed the birdies too cus they need to eat loads to get enough bidy heat to survive the night,, bidy heat?  whats that??? a geratrics hot water bottle?? meant body heat..  new birdies have a 20% survival chance in their 1st year.. not getting enough food in to maintain body heat is the main killer, as though the poor things dont have enough to contend with with their natural habitats being eroded for the sake of a poxy 4 bedroomed barrat house that looks like something out of Toy-Town..  so I always put food out from autumn right through to winter and put double out when there is a frost... and keep me cats in... who's pic u can see in pets... they iz meantal they iz...

And I loved the "bidy heat" - will always think of my hotty as that now!

I do like Autumn for nearly all of the reasons already quoted but have to admit I find it a bit sad and not frightening but "wary" - hope it's not going to be too bad a winter, hope it won't be too long until spring (which I truly love best of all the seasons)  It's all a bit like after a party what with the clearing up and tidying away.

Hi Ozzy, good to have you around again!!  :D

Autumn means I can get out into the garden without getting eaten alive by midges. ;D
I love preparing everything for winter just knowing the garden is readying itself for sleep before bursting into new growth in the spring.
Planting bulbs and that special 'feel' and 'smell' that autumn brings with it. Scuffing my feet through all the multi-coloured crispy leaves and seeing frost on spiders webs.

Eileen.

Ooh - I love this thread. It's so beautiful.

Oz - good to see you back, haven't heard from you in ages. Love the asda bags and the bidy heat! Also you reminded me of another - watching the trees dance with the wind (although this year I've done that throughout summer too!)

Another of my favourites - mornings like this - bright, crisp and cold. beautiful. I think there was a bit of frost last night (just in the air). My poor toms!

Wearing my wellies and not giving a damm about what i tread in.
Knowing that next year I'll have another chance to try and get it right.

Sarah.

Nice to see you back Ozzy  :-*
Lovely crisp mornings with a clear bue cloudless sky (that make you think why wasnt summer like this)  Cutting out all the dead stuff  and composting.  Hoovering  up all the fallen leaves (8  full grown trees in the garden) and making a new leaf bin from bamboo and chicken wire.  Being able to 'get stuck in' and have a good dig without dying in the heat.  Cant wait to get started again.  I love just having a tidy and generally putting all my babies away for the winter.   OOOO and planting out some more bulbs ready for the glorious spring.   Well,  a girl has got to hope ;D

Hi Ozzy, so glad you have come back to us, we missed you.
Oh those lovely autumn night skies - at last I can get back into the garden when it's dark and lie down on the sun lounger to watch the stars overhead. Does anyone else have this "passion" for star gazing, it's so relaxing at the end of the day.

Yes Granny - I love it too. Trouble is there's so much light pollution round here I can rarely see any. The best was when I was in Malta - we went out to a deserted place one night and stood on the cliffs staring at the stairs. It really was amazing. I saw my first ever shooting stars, the milky way and the word 'wow' written in stars across the sky. It expressed exactly how I felt about it! My sister loves the stars so much she is a professional star gazer!

Granny, we too have been known to wrap up in duvets and lay on sun loungers in the pitch black!!  It is amazing the amount of activity up there, spot the satellitte is fun for the kids! ;D We prefer trying to spot the shooting stars!  Mr P has a small telescope (  don't tell anyone! :o ) but unfortunately in this house we have nowhere to store it so is in the loft :'(  I used to love looking at the moon and saturns rings........supose we could cut a hole in the roof! ;D   Dottie P

I'm with you DP (duvet and pillow). have even been known to fall asleep while watching. We too play spot the satellites but not with the kids, just Mr S and myself, theres a lot of junk flying around up there. I'm trying to get enough cash together for a larger telescope - quite fancy one of those with a satellite tracking system (getting lazy in my old age). The night skies at the moment certainly have a 'WOW' factor - masses of stars visible.
