Title: watering whilst on holiday
Post by: starting out on April 29, 2009, 21:23:13
I am going away for a couple of weeks and have purchased the large grow bag trays and have placed my seedlings/plants in those and filled it with water to see how long it lasts. I am concerned about the amount of water these are taking as they are taking so much they are atually wet on the top of the compost. Will this do more harm than good or will they be ok?

Is there anyone who could keep them damp for you while you are away?

I bought a micro irrigation system off ebay for around £7. I still haven't set it up so I can't comment on how well it works but you can set your tap to a low drip for each plant so the plant constantly gets water. I'm off for a fortnight and hopeing my tomatoes don't die.

Or you could buy a water timer off ebay for about £10, this connects to your hose and then you stick a sprinker where it needs to be, im off for 2 weeks at the end of this week, and have set the timmer for 5 minutes at 20:00 every night, the sprinkler covers the whole greenhouse so i can sleep peacefully :)

Are they indoors or in a greenhouse? If they are indoors I'd move them away from the sunny window cills so they are less likely to dry out or get scorched

Sorry I should have explained. These are peppers, chillies, tomatoes, cucumber and squash plants. They are all indoors at the moment and in their own pots.

I cant use a water timer on a hose and sprinkler or an irrigation system or put taps on a slow drip with one under each tap as I havnt enough taps  ;D

There are also a lot of these and I think its just too much to ask for someone to come and water them all individually which is why I have bought the grow bag trays which are holding enough water to last for days so I only need to get someone to refil them which is sorted but I wondered if I would damage them as they are damp on the top of the compost or will they be ok. I dont want to drown them or rot them or whatever may happen.
