Title: Transplanting Onion Sets?
Post by: GlentoranMark on April 28, 2009, 17:38:30
Hi all, I started growing onion sets in window boxes about 2 months ago, they're coming on well  but I've recently acquired a private allotment and I'm wondering should I transplant them to the plot? I'm thinking they will have more space to grow and it will also free up the boxes so I can grow lettuce and other smaller greens.

Will the onions transplant well or should I just leave them and let them grow in the window box?

Thanks.

Why not?
They are often pulled out by birds or worms & have to be 'reset'.

As Tim says iit should be ok I'd dig a small trench and put the box in for size if its quite dry it should come out in one go.  ???     ;D ;D ;D

Thanks, I really didn't have a clue whether they would survive a transplanting, you've put my mind at rest and free'd up a couple of window boxes.

I always start mine in cells and plant out... if you've had this rain they will establish quickly...  :)
