Title: sweet potato slips
Post by: anemone on April 27, 2009, 17:02:01
I've had a sweet potato in water on the windowsill since 20 March. Nothing much seems to be happening.

Am I being impatient or should i just eat it :)

Even if it does produce slips, isn't it too late for them to get a long enough growing season now?

Not yet, mine rarely hit the ground before the start of June... not arrived from T+M yet...  :-[

You've still got time.  I set 2 tubers up at the beginning of January and got the first slip half way through March.  I've got around 15 so far and they're producing at a rate of knots now.  They'll go out late May/early June.

Have you got no roots yet?

They seem very variable. I put 2 tubers in water in mid February, both bought in the same supermarket at the same time.  One has loads of roots and some excellent slips which I am just about to pot up, the other is only just beginning to sprout and has nobbly bits where the roots should be.

thanks, i'll leave it for another few weeks then. There are no roots as such but nobbly bits that look like they may turn into roots. There are also tiny pink nobbly bits appearing further up the potato - might these turn into slips?

I started one off in February, it's got masses of roots, but all sprouting from one initital root, and no signs of any other growth, I will keep going but is it likely to do anything?
