had a fascinating time on the plotty this morning. I was preparing a new bed and Mr Blackbird was helping himself to whatever I'd dug up. I found another slow worm, so I covered it back up, and tried not to walk on that bit again. But I must have missed the newt. The blackbird didn't, he had a right old battle with it, but won in the end. I just sat back and watched the pair of them fight it out - then mid way thought ooh should I stop this, then thought no its nature doing what it knows. I guess it was the blackbirds lucky day?!
I'd have stuck me oar in & chased the bird away... but I don't think there's a right or wrong with that - as you say, it is nature's way. I just prefer newts to blackbirds!
Got to agree with you on prefering newts to the blackbird (bit rarer / special).
But I was being a bit dozy and didn't actually see what the blackbird was getting at until it was probably too late really and I saw the underside of the newt :'( and then at that point his tail fell off :o
Next time I'll try and be a bit more vigilant!
I LOVE NEWTS ;D
Me dear old dad's got a pond in his back garden that's absolutely TEEMING with them! And he knows where there are a fair few Greater Crested ones as well ;)
I remember when I was a kid we used to go 'taddy and newting' in the pond at the farm across the way. I managed to breed a WHOLE baby-bath full of newts and they all survived :D
Don't see them so much nowadays :(
They're ace aren't they - definitely prefer them alive tho :)
They're new to me - never seen them before (in the wild as it is), so its been great up on the plot to find them, so you were lucky to see them around as a kid.
I've christened them all "Gussie" after Gussie Fink Nottle from the Jeeves and Wooster stories ;D
I had a pair of newts once.
One was called John and the other was called Olivia........
:P
And they got blown up by a Newtron bomb!
::)
