Is it me or are the pks of seeds slowly getting less in them or am I buying from the wrong places, got mine from various, t&m, the real seed poeple, marshalls, I could go on. anyone know a good place to purchase from? :-[
Seeds by size gets a good report from most contributors...
Most people think smaller packets are a good thing.. I think it's a con.
The Seeds of Italy range have large APC's... over a thousand isn't uncommon...
:)
I bought two packs of mellon seeds at the weekend and while there were easily enough in each I was amazed to find one pack (T&M I think) had only 15 in while the other pack, from Seeds of Italy, had 150... Both cost the same too...
I also got a couple of packs of different T&M cucumber seeds at the same time and only noticed after I'd paid that not only were they 3.99 each (why... are they magic cucumbers???) but there was only 4 seeds in each pack... Felt a tad hard done by there....
thanks for the replies guys/gals, have just looked on seeds of italy site, mite have a change next year. ;D
If you are growing standard veg check lidls (28p a pack) and in poundstretcher and asda all have great value packs and of course theres a great range at wilkinsons.
I used to use T&M and others but got annoyed at shelling out over £1 a pack to find the same for 30-50p at the local bargain stores and have simular if not better germination with the cheaper stuff.
So give them a whirl you'd be surprised at what you can find.

Try Premier Seeds Direct through their ebay shop. Most are 99p/packet and seem to be good seed.

I've got a few squash seeds from them this year, they do have a good selection of more unusual stuff...about 8-10 seeds per 99p packet.
I also noticed cucumber seeds are very few per packet, which is why I only buy them in the Wyvale 50p per packet sale, or swap them. Why are they in particular so expensive though? Anyone know? ???
I have found that Franchi Seeds of Italy are very generous whereas the old companies tend to be very stingy and mean. I cannot justify £1 per seed for cucumbers in case they don't all come up!
I got Franchi Melon Seeds and there are loads in there enough for 3 years at least!

Wyevale garden centres have a sale at the end of the season - 50p a pack for most seeds e.g. Suttons, Fothergills, T&M (including the Duchy Organic range) and others are 50% off.
Obviously they'll be a season old when you use them but that hasn't been a problem for me yet.
Franchi usually do huge numbers of seeds - too many perhaps!
In answer to your question Deb... 'cos people buy them... F1 nonsense, stick with open pollinated ones like Crystal apple. Much lower price for many more seeds... :-X
After much hesitation, I bought the £3.99 for four cucumber seeds from T&Ms and I thought I'd let those of you who have also bought them or arre thinking of it that all four of my seeds germinated on the windowsill at home. The seedlings/plants are now about 7" long and are now in the coldframe waiting to planted out in mid-May - we are in London so, hopefully, fairly safe to plant out then!
I got the £7.99 one "free" last year - but had to buy 10 packets other seeds to get the 11th free! Three out of three germinated 100% but damped off. Two seeds left to try this year.
Cucumbers especially, seem expensive per seed, bought some from Italy last year (loads in the packet), and bought some from Wilkinsons Marketmore 70.
Planted two of the Italy, two of the Marketmore 70 and two of Marketmore 76 that I had laying around from two seasons ago, five germinated and have grown on into plants, only one of the old 76 didn't. Was pleased with that turnout, just hope they continue to do well, all have third leaves on and one (the giant!) has 5 with more forming.
Back on topic... The Wilkinsons ones were 79p per packet and there are around 30 plus seeds in each I think.
I am trying my own seed this year!
Sowed them a couple of days ago but have nothing to report as yet.
The original variety is 'Prolific'
How I came to save seed was a part fruit went quite soft in the fridge so I collected the seed, washed them and dried them on the greenhouse shelf (sun dried) so its just a case of waiting to see what happens.
Nothing ventured nothing gained!
nice one tee gee, keep us posted on wot happens :)
