Title: My Garden allotment - before and after!
Post by: rosebud on April 21, 2009, 23:22:14
These are the before and after pictures of our garden allotment.  When we moved in it was swamped with weeds and bluebells and took hours of digging to remove them & still the blighters keep popping up between the seed potatoes!

In there so far we've got potatoes, onions, garlic, green beans and the peas are going in tomorrow.  We're really pleased at just how well it's coming along after such hard work! :)

bluebell bah humbug the previous owner must have thought the were gold cause she planted them everywhere and i mean everywhere >:(. 6 yrs later and they are still popping up but since last year i have taken to pulling out as much as the leaf 'stem' as possible and this year i have noticed the numbers are a little less so have continued to do this this year religiously, i think this must basically prevent the bulb from getting food via photosynthesis and hopefully it also gets moisture into the bulb which may cause it to rot. when i have to dig an area and any bulbs show themselves they come out forthwit regardless of how tiny they are and get thrown in the burn heap because i find they don't compost down at all unless i split them in 4 :o. so if you threw bulbs into your compost heap be prepared to sieve the compost as there may be viable ones in there waiting to grow next year. only one veg bed seems to be still infested quite alot but i dug out quite a few bulbs when i was digging my bean trenches this year so hopefully i should see a reduction in that bed next year. otherwise they are mainly in the paths now.

PS you mini plot looks fab :D

Bloody hell you've both done loads since I was last up there!  It's looking really good.

That area is a lot bigger than it appears in the picture - if it's where I'm thinking of.  What else are you putting in and how much will be ready by the time I next visit?  ;D ;D

I like bluebells in their place, but they're a nightmare to get rid of.

Thats a huge amount of work, congrats!
Have to agree about the bluebells, in a normal garden they are a pain in the proverbial! And the only way, sor far, that I've managed to halt their numbers is by digging them up, and not just pulling the leaves out / off (sorry thifasmom )

that's OK i use the method i described because when i constantly dug my flower beds to get the darn things out i was constantly dislodging the plants i wanted to establish.

and i don't just remove the leaves when i pull i take my time and gently remove both leaf and flower stalk relentlessly till they give up on bothering this year.

like i said this year i have noticed a real difference in their numbers as in no flowers at all in the flower beds and only a couple of leaves under a few plants that i didn't spot when they were first rearing their head early spring and now i see them and well................now they are out ;D ;D.
