Title: I sit in my greenhouse, do you?
Post by: genlistlass on April 21, 2009, 10:51:16
Does anyone else SIT in their greenhouse? Up in the frozen north here the wind is often bitter even when the sun is out, so I sit in my greenhouse.

Yesterday was lovely, after a ear-aching trot along the Prom, I came home for a CUPPA and a reduced Cadbury's Egg. Left the g/h door open and sat there in the sun but out of the wind, luvverly! At the same time I can check out my seedlings and see what needs attention.

Think I might tart it up a bit with some fancy furnishings......... I have an nice cast iron Victorian plant stand, from a car-boot sale, thats needs painting, any other ideas?

Pity the previous owner used white paint that is now sunhardened on the roof and side windows, I can't get it off without lots of elbow grease which I cannot buy at Wilkinsons ;D Thought "proper" gardeners used whitewash but haven't seen that on sale since I was a tot.

Yes and last year I had a suana in there!  Heated up a load of rocks on the barbie and then sat in the (empty) greenhouse poured water over and bathed in the steam.
But yes I sit in my greenhouse.

Doesn't everyone sit in their greenhouse, you need some time like that to inspect and tend the plants ........... and tell them how well they are doing or warn them to pull their socks up or it's the compost bin for them  :)

Yes Gen I know all too well that east wind is like a frozen knife at times, won't be long before the seedlings are planted out and the fuchsias are out so I can sit with a coffee and the radio inspecting the tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, chillies and melons ............... who said anything about full greenhouses?

Try a paint stripper called Nitromors I think its called. Paint it on and watch it bubble off. I have never used it on glass before so try a small area first.

If I had a greenhouse [ hope next year ] I would definitely make room for a comfy chair,

from where I could survey my domane --   and in the evening I would take in a glass of wine

for my sundowner and plan the next days gardening.    ;)

Would have two chairs, one for OH -- cos he's my mate.           ;D

Me too, if only I had one.  But do sometimes shelter in my plastic greenhouse to have a craft ciggie if it is windy and cold and raining.  OH has given up and can smell the smile for 5 miles.  Some people wish for expensive shoes and clothes but a greenhouse would be heaven on earth.

I'm jealous on two counts:
1. you have a greenhouse (we WILL get round to having one!)
2. you're in Northumberland - I do pine for home every time I see your signature!

yeah, very often! esp this time of year when pausing between work, usually listening to the radio, having a lovely time.my chair is now poised precariously over some melon seedlings,so am very careful with it. love this time of year when the door is open, and other folk pass by for a chat, perching them elves in the doorway, helping me admire all my little babies, giving welcome advice etc. we presently paing greenie number 2,so will have a bit more space (yeah right)next year for visitors to actually come in

Spudly - thanks for Nitramors tip

Lottie103 - whats  a good Northumbrian lass doing in Liverpool? We are having the 4th sunny morning on the trot, amazing!

Doesn't matter whether you are sitting in your shed, your plastic tunnel, or your plastic greenhouse, its all luxury........ I have a folding chair , green with complicated legs but folds like a baby buggy (kind of) takes up little space.... and there's just space on my little potting table for a cuppa  :)

My gardening philosophy is do as little hard work as possible and enjoy the results as much as possible! Gotta get your priorities right, life's too short.......etc etc

Oh this thread does bring back some memories.  ;D

My very first gh was half brick and when the kids and hubby got too much I used to sit on the floor so as not to be seen and hide for half an hour. lol Im sure that old gh saved my sanity many a time!!  ;)

Although I was often accompanied by 3 heavily panting golden retrievers ( it was hot in there) as they could ALWAYS find me.   :-\

??? No idea Gen! We left for uni years ago thinking there was little there for us but we'd love to come back now. It's harder to leave very time we come home :(. A very underrated part of the country - luckily for Northumberland really!  I was up there seeing the folks last week - no sign of sun then. I think it was waiting for me to leave  ::). The weather was too yucky for my parents to wander up the coast (my favourite, it's gorgeous up there) so we spent a happy few hours wandering around Heighley Gate instead (although I hadn't realised Wyvale now own it!).

I won't go in my greenhouse yet as I have had rats in there.  They have tunnelled in through the earth and left their droppings on the path which runs down the middle.   >:(   I have fed them with some lovely corn which has been done up in little sachets especially for them.........yes, it's rat bait.  All I need to do now is pluck up the courage and go in there.
