Title: Had a brain wave for two very differnt fruit cages
Post by: Al37 on April 20, 2009, 20:53:48
Who would like to see my fruit cages?
Both made (apart from the netting) from materials destined for the tip or bonfire.
The first one is a load of branches from a lottie neighbor and the second big one used to be a garden gazebo I bought it many years ago for a summer birthday party but it now has a new life ;) :D ;D

Must say I like your first one, a bit like a yurt.  We are right next to a nature reserve and are not allowed large structures so the first one is organic enough to pass muster,

Also have a large very productive red current in my home plot which is huge so need something large but cheap, together with some poundland fleece it will be perfect,

Tried netting hate finding birds tangled in the netting,

Thanks for that Digeroo,
The netting I have used has a very fine weave , birds wont get wings and legs and thing caught in it :)
I don't want to share my raspberries with them but I certainly don't want to harm them.

That's really impressive.  Had you thought of drawing plans and posting?  Did you make it up as you went along?  It's genius!

PJW,
I am assuming you are talking about the first picture and the cage made from branches. I didn't do any plans (not on paper anyway) I tend to go through a bit of an odd proccess I get an idea and it nestles in the back of my mind for a while, could be a day or occasionaly a number of months. In this case it was about an hour ;D
I started with six triangles made from the thickest branches and made a ring of slightly thinner branches to sit on top os them. Then it was a case of flexing branches to make the domed top.
When this picture was taken it wasn't finished, when you look at it now it is all made up of smaller triangles.

It's very ingenious.  I think there should be an award for the best idea on a plot!

I don't know if I would win anything for the best idea, but maybe if there was a bonkers section I would stand a chance. ;D

I really love the first one.  I wish I was clever enough to make it.  Must look for some bendy sticks, has it got a front door?  I suppose I could do one smaller, a bit like the shape of an igloo.  Great idea, will sleep on it.

Hi  Borlotti,
for the door I have used a flap of netting. If you look at the picture the biggest triangle nearest the foreground is the way in. To close it up its just a case of pulling the flap over and securing it with a few little hooks on the end of some elastic. ;)
