2 questions about me carrots, firstley do you think they are ready for thinning out yet, the tallest is about 6cm high. Secondly I read that adult carrot fly dont fly above 45cm high, the pot I have my carrots in measures 50cm off the ground, do I still need to keep the fleece on to protect them ??

I started thinning out some of mine they are slightly large. The carrots are about 1mm in diameter. Ate the whole plant. Delicious. Nothing left to attract the flies.
Does'nt really matter how soon you start - just start thinning them out whenever there big enough to easily get hold of. Although I quite often leave it too late or forget althogether and still get a good crop.
might follow your leed there Keef, seems a shame to disturb them just yet
yep i don't thin at all i try and sow as thinly as possible then when it comes time to harvesting i pull the biggest leaving room for the smaller ones to grow well :-\ bigger :D
Are you lot sowing carrots in a greenhouse or direct sowing outside? I have one tub in my GH but not sown any outside yet. I thought it would be too cold ???

sowed mine outside mid march and had really good germination.
I'm sowing direct... second batch. Under fleece for the fly not the cold... :)
I have 2 large tubs on the go, the first ones (in the top picture) were sown 15th March, i'm pleased as punch, only sowed 2nd tub week or so ago so still waiting for signs from them
