If i was to go down the rotorvator route can anyone recommend a cheap good one.

good/cheap dichotomy.... unless you get lucky on somewhere like freecycle...  :-X

There are always 2nd hand ones for sale on EBay.  I would recommend seeing it in working action before parting with any money though.  

My neighbour paid £179 for a new one but I am unsure of the make and model.  I can ask for the details if you are interested.  Or a new 2 stroke Mantis can be purchased for £250.

try and get one with a briggs & stratton engine

dont think you can get a 'good cheap one' I got mine from mowers-online.co.uk a briggs 6.5hp called the ardisan badger, had it 3 years with no problems and it will go through anything, my 2nd plot had never been used and once the weeds etc were cleared it turned the soil over brilliant, have got pics of b4 and after, have a look around online, am sure you will find something but I personally would try to go new so at least you get a warranty. good luck :)
