Title: compost and spent yeast
Post by: electric landlady on April 16, 2009, 19:47:07
Hello all
Just a quickie
Unless it ignites a fearsome debate of course.

Are we OK to put the spent yeast residue from our recent spate of home brewing on the compost heap?

I think we are but the other half wants a more expert opinion  :P  ;)

yes you can compost it. It also works very well in slug traps.

I used to use it in whatever I was cooking. It's full of goodness so why waste it?

Thankyou! Ideas for slug traps are always welcome :)

I am intrigued about the cooking - could you put it in stew etc? doesn't it give things a yeasty flavour?

I was wondering if we could open our own Marmite factory!

You can certainly use it in stew, curry, anything like that. If used in moderation it won't give it a yeasty taste.

A home brewer friends wife you'st to use some of the expired yeast (after fermenting the beer) to make home made bread. They said it made the bread taste like beer! Sounds a good idea :)

Hi,
Always used ingredients - (not kits) for brewing for 30 yrs. All the 'brewing waste' was mixed in the compost. The worms loved it!
