I know I'm getting a bit ahead of myself, but last year I lost a lot of spuds for various reasons - turned green where they weren't earthed up, rotted where I left them in the ground too soon, went soft and manky in the boxes in the shed - so I want to make sure I am ready this time around. Earthing up is well under way, so I have that covered (literally). but where can I get cheap potato sacks?
The only ones I have found seem pretty pricey for a bit of hessian. Suggestions pretty please ...
Becasuse i buy some spuds in winter as we use alot I save the paper bags and use then works well just keep frost free :)
Try your local chippy. We got loads of paper sacks from ours and they were glad to get rid, them all you need is a frost free place. We use the outside toilet!!! and you can always compost the bags at the end of the season...
will probably need a mousetrap as well, they like spuds too, ;D
Homebase used to give out paper bags with purchases, everytime I went past the shop I popped in for a few. Not sure if they still do them or have converted to placcy bags, but might be worth a look.
I store my tatties in them, and they keep well.
I the past I have asked the veg supplier at the local farmers market for empty spud sacks, but usually end up hanging the spuds from a rafter in brown paper bags (courtesy of Homebase - they still do them :) ) that I put inside string/net bags that I've picked up over the last few years.
I get my multi ply paper bags from my local seed merchant!
