what have you been up to in the plot/garden over the weekend....
I spent 3 hours in the allotment shed sheltering from the heavy rain.
Well, after work yesterday I was gathering no-dig spuds to get them away from the mice until the light went. I ended up bagging and sorting them by candlelight in the garage :)
Last Sunday more of the same (only desiree). Started to dig a hole for an apple tree -bent spade (slight exaggeration :) ) but the ground was much too hard as the rain hadn't arrived. Worked out one of the trees would be going under one of the compost heaps so shifted heap, ground too hard to drive supporting pole in, but the 'bin' seems ok, dug hole in wet ground underneath the heap. Weeded, went back to car -battery flat >:( . Made elderberry wine in the afternoon whilst the battery charged up and walked it back to the car in the evening.
Saturday -the hedge of Sisyphus, or the Forth bridge of hedges. Spent the most of the day alternately up a ladder with shears, loppers & 6ft pruner; or shredding what I'd pruned. In the afternoon my next door neighbour lent me his whizzy, petrol powered hedgetrimmer on a pole with the top you can set at right angles -good toy :) if a little too late. Won't be any good for the back hedge though, just too tall.
Well you did ask ;D
Jeremy
P.S. I did eat some of my own toms, courgettes, onions, spud and sweetcorn to make up for the hard work.
What weekend....it came and went in a whizz! Didn't get out to play at all :'( Saturday morning spent with the mortgage advisor, BORING! and Saturday afternoon at the aquatic shop with the family so they could buy more fish and accessories for the aquarium. Sunday we went to Barleyland Farm in Billericay for the Essex Country fair and steam rally. Was good fun - kids went on lots of rides, watched lots of country things being made, admired lots of animals, cringed at the working beehive, ate hog roast and watched a huge procession of steam and traction engines!
Didn't get to the plot at all this weekend :'( Friends down to visit, carnival in town, plus funfair, so did that during the day and watched the torchlit procession Saturday night. Went for a walk Sunday and the heavens opened so we came home! Drank far too much wine and am still recovering for my stupidness! But a fun time was had by all ;D
Going down the motorway and got nicked for speeding >: ( 94 mph) so, £60 fine and still waiting to see how many points :-\ .
Apart from that a lovely Saturday and restful Sunday ;D .

Peter, naughty, naughty! ::) Sunday up at the lottie, and with great regret pulled my sweet peas out which were looking a bit past it. Tidied up the area they were in, leaving some sweet corn, beetroot, and my sunflowers which are looking at bit sinister now - bending over in a most intimidating way, all the colour gone from them. Mine reached about 9 feet, and Mike's 11 feet. Left some cornflowers in, which are still flowering but also past their best too.
Had a break for some apple juice and a chat to a new lottie holder opposite us, and then Mike (hubby) arrived from his Stamp Fayre, to dig over the potato patch and lay some manure on it. We chatted some more with the Newbie, and offered him some of our spinach which he said he loved, and then more weeding and tidying.
Weather was a bit of a mixture, sunny then cloudy, but rain kept off until later on in the day.
Decided to make a mixed veggie stew for tea, so dug some more potatoes up. a swede, some carrots, and spinach and parsnips. Really pleased with my parsnips, but planted the seed into a tube set in the soil, and they have grown so large and the soil was so muddy had trouble getting them out. Mike had to saw the tube up the side to release them. We walked up to the top alley and looked at other peoples Plots and then delivered a parsnip and some potatoes to a friend on the way home. Felt famished and made the veggie stew was lovely with some warm bread. Then it started bucketing down, once we were home all snug indoors. Lovely day. Excuse me if this doesn't work, taken yesterday in the rain :D busy_lizzie
True busy, but it's a good job he didn't catch me earlier was doing 120 :o
